Ok, well and update..
car runs smooth, idle and rev range is reasonably fine. howver, there is still large ammounts of white smoke with a strong smell..
I'm assuming that it's water in the fuel, but no idea why.. head gasket?
Hi, Hopefully people will be able to help me with my problem.
my turbo started to have some noises, so i removed it and installed a brand new one.
now i've gone to start the car and there is lots of white smoke from the exhaust, and intermittent running from smooth to rough, smooth.. the white smoke would clear up, and come back with vengance...
there has been oil splatter from the connection from the pipe that goes of the end of the manifold, to the canister in front of the engine.. so i'm guessing i didn't get the seal, should there be oil there?
... I have tried running it for a minute + and goes from good to bad etc.
if anyone has an idea, please enlighten me!

How is your water level going?
Is your expansion tank bubbling?
The canister you speak of is it on the EGR line back into the intake manifold?
Could be a waste gate problem or you have an oil seal problem at turbo.
Im no expert here on turbos on TD5s but some one will see this post soon and help out im sure.
If we are talking thick white smoke and burnt oil smell being the funny smell I would suggest oil seal leak from the turbo into the exhaust.
"from the pipe that goes of the end of the manifold, to the canister in front of the engine.."
Not sure where this is...
Sorry for the dodgy description, yes i was refering to the egr line into the inlet manifold... initial thought was it was leaking, although i have monitored it and it appears to be fine.
what i have just discovered is that when i disconnected the airbox hose to the turbo there was alot of smoke coming from it, i removed the top breather hose that is connected to the rocker cover and it was flowing from it...
also, the turbo is a new garret from the box so should be fine.

Could this be linked to the reason the turbo died in the first place?
I just ask as I had a similar situation with a 300Tdi after the engine inguested a glow plug. Lots of white smoke. The top of number one piston looked like a lego brick. The glow plug was eventually spat out via the turbo. I guess this is worse case scenario - I'm sure their are many other plausible reasons without such serious consequences.
How much is a lot of smoke from the breather? Smoke out of this breather is usually wispy, not thick white smoke. Usually some comes out but not excessive amounts if you have excessive amounts it might indicate worn cylinders/piston rings etc. To me it still does not address the thick white smoke out of the exhaust which I would still think is burning oil. Is the engine oil level falling when you check the dipstick?
"turbo started to have some noises, so i removed it and installed a brand new one."
Am I right in saying this all started when you put the new turbo on?
White smoke is unburnt diesel, blue is burnt oil, black is overfuelled diesel.
Is that new turbo actually spinning?
Problem. Solved!!
When the Turbo packed it in, it dumped a tonne of oil into the exhaust, having driven it for quite a while all smoke is gone and I'm left with a car that is performing the best it has since ownership.. before the Turbo was very quiet that I had mistaken for normal now it can actually be heard, and felt on the seat to pants metre!
Have to fix a gasket but all is well![]()
hello on the timing cover there is this thing that then goes to the fan could you please tell me if it is called FAN BEARING 300 Tdi i have attached pis which is circled
