    Mystery knocking sound - D2 V8

My D2 V8 has recently started an intermittent knocking sound that I just can't figure out. I can go days without hearing it, then for no apparent reason it will stay for many minutes. There is no vibration or any other symptoms.

The sound usually appears at or near idle when rolling to a stop, but can at times persist when driving at low speeds. It appears to come from near the LH rear wheel & sounds like what you would hear if there was a piece of rope tangled on the driveshaft & slapping on the undercarriage.

The sound is not tied to road speed, as it will sometimes persist while stopped. It will also speed up then disappear if the throttle is depressed while in neutral.

I can't figure it out, but I have a bad feeling about it & would appreciate any input.

    Thanks,
    SmokyBear

It could be a part of the exhaust pipe that is in contact with a part somewhere underneath the vehicle.

Mine is touching on the U section that is very close a section and it touches when the exhaust is cold, but when the exhaust system warms up, it expands sufficiently to stop the vibration.

If your exhaust system is unchanged, then maybe check your gearbox and engine mounts - there may be a slight position shift somewhere.

Either that or check the rubbers that attach the piping to the truck?

Mine did it, in neutral, or with the cluth depressed, when coming to a stop, or after filling up at a gas station, taking up drive and then stopping to give way.
I thought it was the front driveshaft, so I renewed all UJs and centre bearing, but the noise persisted.

If I let the clutch go and depressed it again the noise went away. And it does not seem to be the transfer input gear, as with the Transfer in neutral no noise can be heard when switching gears in the main gearbox.

In my case the ACE also made some knocking sounds, only in warm, but neither in cold or hot.

Do the check letting the clutch go, no violently, but a little bit sharper than usual, depress it again and listen for the noise.

    Best of luck
