I had the face lifted model, 2003 onwards or thereabouts with td5 engine. All the bugs in the earlier series 2's were ironed out in this variant....a point confirmed by the service people at Trivett. Not one fault in mine from new but traded it on a Disco 3 tdv6 at 50,000 klms. From memory, the centre diff lock was returned in this model.

I reckon most people would say that the 2003 D2a would be the model to choose as they had fixed most issues, I believe the oil pump bolt was still a problem. CDL was not fitted on 01/02 models I believe. V8 fuel economy is about 18l/100km, I have V8 and love it, if I was buying again a would get one already on sequential gas if it was my daily driver. A general rule with most cars is buy the latest version as they are usually improved on earlier models. I have a 99 model and have had a pretty good run (touch wood), I like the look of the upgrade model front lights but I've seen a few where the plastic outer lens has weathered badly which makes me glad that my lights are glass.

I have the 2004 V8 & love it, keep it serviced & shouldn't be an issue. I don't do hardcore but will give most things a go with regular surprise in great comfort. Haven't got ACE but those who have swear by it.
There is also a lot of reading within the D2 pages here detailing the short falls but most importantly all the good points too.
    Cheers, Peter.

Love my V8 D2a, ACE is such a good thing, a D2 with ACE and 18's will run circles around a D3/4 through the twistys but is let down with a lack of power in comparision.

I have said this before, I actually enjoy driving my D2a more then driving our D3. The D2 feels like a real 4x4 where as the D3 feels more like a luxury car.

Ours is a HSE and for a few extra dollars more you get a large amount of luxury over a base model and you get ACE and those extra's are definitely worth a few dollars more.

If I was in the market right now for a D2a I would again buy a V8, yes they are not as economical as the diesel but just look at all the hassles in this section TD5 owners are having where as there are few problems with V8's in comparision. Plus if you cook a V8 you go and buy a recoed 4.6 from TRS for bugger all and have an even better 4x4.

    cheers,
    Terry

We went from the Tdi Defender to the Td5 Discovery for

    1. Added power for towing, and
    2. The cheese & kisses didn't like driving the Defender.

We test drove a V8 D2 and she was happy with that so we got the Td5 because we wanted the diesel for many of the usual reasons but also because of the fuel economy and no petrol sniffing issues around a diesel in remote areas.

A Td5 with a chip upgrade and a larger intercooler isn't going to out do a V8 but it ain't the slouch you might think.

    Your choice in the end.
    Cheers, Dale

We have a 99 D2 TD5 and a 03 D2 TD5. The 03 is hands down a better car even though we've done more miles in it. The 99 has ACE which I think was discontinued on the 03, and although that makes the 99 drive beautifully on country winding roads, it's still not a better vehicle than the 03.

    Hey Big O,

ACE was available throughout the various D2 models including 03 and 04 D2a's.
I don't expect that this comment will be popular with many but I agree with you that the D2a's feel better to drive then the earlier D2's, I base this on the various earlier D2's and D2a's that I have driven.

Why, I don't know, but I do know they feel quite different.

    cheers,
    Terry
