Just a thought, but the red CDL light does not always come on immediately the lever has been moved to the locked position. Sometimes it may not come on until the car has travelled 5 metres or so. Spinning a jacked up wheel may not produce the required situation.
Similarly, unlocking the lever does not always extinguish the light immediately. The final locking and unlocking of lock-ring is activated by a spring, and the gear teeth need to be aligned appropriately first. The inside of the light switch bears on the bronze activator which needs to be fully in position for the switch to operate. Just a few thou in it.
Ten.

The light on my D1 has always needed the vehicle to be moved a couple of metres forwards or backwards to go off. I assumed it was because the wheel had to turn a revolution or two. Is that wrong?

I think I remember reading there is two switches. ( can't remember though) 1 is for the light, the other for the slabs. If you have checked that the cdl is operating correctly, cut the wire to the slabs ( centre connector, middle wire at bottom, black and blue, pin 9 if I remember right. Check first though) then either leave it, or crimp connectors to rejoin. If this solves your problem all good, and you know what's happening, if you still have your lights, it might not be the cdl giving you the problem.
Now I'm writing this, I'm doubting myself as to what your issue was. Is it that your cdl light stays on, and also the 3 amigos, or just the 3 little barstards?
My cdl can be a pain in the arse, the light doesn't always come on, or always goes off. I have to reverse and jump on breaks, or drive forward and the same.

For the record the wire cut only effects the TC activation in relation to CDZl activation and turning the car on/off.

Has anyone installed a switch instead of cutting the wire? If so what are the specs on the wire and distances of switch from the cut?

Yes, and it doesnt really matter where the switch goes and the wire, just be realistic.
