TD5 Fuel Consumption Figures

2004 td5 Auto Classic Country 7 seater
bought new on October 2004
-ARB Sahara Bar
-Dual Battery
-IPF spotlights
mostly stock standard until about a year ago, since then:
- EGR removed
- silicon intercooler hoses
- 255/70/16 BFG All Terrains (not expected to improve economy)
- Safari snorkel
- K&N Filter (may go back to paper soon though)
- decat pipe fitted

Mostly used now for daily short trips to the train station (2.5km) then for the longer family touring trips towing a camper trailer and often with a roof rack as well.
When we first owned it we lived on the Gold Coast and had lots of freeway trips which is evident in the good economy numbers, we've been in Perth since mid-2007 and the change in driving style is definitely reflected in the economy.
Overall I'm not all that satisfied with my economy figures hence the recent upgrades. Thinking of removing the middle silencer next. Economy is reasonable but considering that other owners are faring better, I'd like to improve mine more. The recent upgrades have had a positive impact but not to the extent I'd hoped.

Not commenting on YOUR driving (as I have never witnessed it) ;) but the most frustrating aspect as a motorist is people driving so gently that they dont get off from lights quickly or up to posted speeds quickly (not stupid quick - just quickly)

Or holding up traffic crawling along when the vehicle has the capacity to hold speed limits...

My pet peeve - Caravan towing persons who refuse to do AT LEAST the 100 km/h limit that a Prime Mover/Trail Combo is allowed to do...

Yes, we get better economy at 90km/h when towing the "Griswald Family Roadblocker" but safe? No way.... The key to safe driving - go with the flow of the traffic, especially the big stuff!!!!

I can't imagine why anyone would own any 4x4 and then complain about well known (lack of) economy figures.

X3. i drive to the limit but if its allgood stay at 100kph instead of 110. And i still get a easy 10L/100 wich ithink is very good for a rolling office block.

I have just come back from a 636 kilometre trip to Box Hole meteor crater and used 56.0 litres. 2002 TD5, bog standard. 2 up with camping gear but lightly loaded and no roof rack. About 400 km of tar, the rest good dirt road. Very flat here in Central Aust. Travelled in convoy, so speed was rarely over 100 kph. Poor bloke with a 100 series diesel cruiser and trailer used 23 litres per 100 kilometres!

Highway unloaded 9.7lt per 100

Around town. 12.3

Just drove Melbourne to Sydney via the outskirts of Canberra, fully loaded wife three kids and the back packed full.

Filled up at 847kms and put 85 litres in it. Exactly 10lt/100km.

My speedo is exact according to the GPS, and I drove at 110 on cruise control where possible. No other add ons, and fully standard except for a missing EGR that disappeared the other day. :cool:

Being the engineer that I am, I have logged all fuel usage from the day I took delivery 8 years ago on 27 march 2003

D2a TD5 auto.

Best has been 8.2L/100km
Worst has been 14.2L/100km
Average is 11L/100km give or take a little.
Total fuel used 31,589L for 287,385kms and you wonder why the fuel pumps wear out??

I just realized the effect my bigger tyres are having on my supposed fuel economy. I have been getting 12-12.5L/100km around town and considering that my trips are usually 5 minute max, I expected it to be a little on the high side. However, then I realised that my speedo is 10% out..showing 100km/h when doing 110km/h on the GPS and then talking over the CB to other convoying vehicles. So, this 10% increase means I have 10% better economy which equates to 10.5-11L/100km which I am very happy about. I am now in the throws of doing some serious mathematical calculations involving circumference, distance, revolutions and speed so hopefully will get an exact idea of the effects and changes due to bigger tyres. When we move next year all my trips will be 30minutes minimum, and with a new air filter, oil filter and injector cleaner starting to work its magic, hopefully we might get a little better economy again.

My Disco is returning excellent economy figures this past 2 weeks..

It hasnt moved an inch...

But as a comparison - The LV (Hilux D4D) is returning around 14l/100km

My 2003 Land Rover Discvovery 2 HSE TD5 which is automatic was only getting 450kms out of a tank when I first purchased it and drove it from Sydney to Hobart.
Since then I've done some further work to it and last week got my best result yet - almost 600kms from a tank at about 13.5L per 100km. This was from a combination of highway and city driving with a lot of short trips. I assume that highway only on a long trip would see even better.
Modifications to the vehicle - retuned ECU, EGR removed, boost increased, turbo boost box and uprated MAF. Has some extra weight and draw from the accessories on the vehicle I imagine, but standard size tyres at the moment.
