TD5 Fuel Consumption Figures

G'day all'
I was going to post a thread about economy and air filters,but will do it here;).My D2a with standard ecu,EGR gone and standard tyres and no roof rack,was getting about 10l/100km city,then over a few months this increased to about 11-12?,not much better on h-way.It was running fine so I put it down to driving /traffic?,checked air filter(genuine LR) as it had done about 25k,with very little off road,looked ok with a little dirt but still clean enough(will take photo),but I decided to change it before I went away for Easter.With new genuine filter,the trip at Easter returned about 9.3l/100km:eek: and that includes a third city cycle!,also the engine seems a bit livelier??,a cheep and easy thing to check:D

Some days hard, others I take it easy... Strong headwinds or strong tail winds... All too variable to measure IMO.

And when it's running low I throw in some more ;)

Lately I don't get mpg or l/100km anyway... My economy is 155l per 3 months...... The ONLY upside of a Toyota Hilux work vehicle!!!

I'm with you Tombie, I often do a quick mental calculation when I fillup but never record......I suppose you could pass it on down to your great grandchildren because they wont know what Land Rovers are by then.

My 2001 Disco TD5 manual is chipped, runs 19psi boost, 270,000ks, 4" lift, runs bigger tyres, roof rack with pole carrier, hilift, and an awning, drawers, bullbar, winch, aircon on all the time, I get around 10.5/100k around town/hwy and around 13/100k to 15/100k towing the camper, worst has been 17/100k crossing the Simpson desert, towing our camper.

my 02 TD5 gets about 9-10 and i do mostly city driving. I run Caltex Vortex and rarely run the AC.

No Mods (Yet....) other then a custom exhaust and a high flow air filter.

But I guess its all just down to your right foot. My Misses says I drive like an old woman but she flogs her yarris.

All good and fine when you have good access to a fuel supply. I find it useful to know what the best and worst consumption figures are when you are planning a trip where there is no servo at regular intervals.

Nothing worse than miscalculating how much fuel you need in the outback and being stranded in the middle of nowhere!

That alone motivates me to keep a record of how much fuel I use.

127,157 km and 16,929 litres of diesel used = 13.3 litres per 100km

2004 Td5 auto with lots of extra weight, Toombie chip, EGR removed and a mixture of 29'' & 32" tyres - estimate 75/25 on road/off road. I still reckon I should do better - maybe it's the steel rear bar, rock sliders, bar/winch + 150kg peranently in the rear?

Sure, but I have a simple rule for remote travel...

Calc at 15l/100km + 20litres reserve.

I base it on this to allow for hard slogging and a happy reserve ;)

So my effective calc allows 900km offroad on my tanks + 20l reserve - if I use 15l per 100km.

Based on my avg distance per tank I do get over 1100km before filling up at first sign of fuel light. This is with a 2700kg Kerb weight.

I think I'd be happy with 15L/100km in the hard slogg stakes.

Seems like your fuel consumption is a lot better than mine.

Well here is the verdict chaps.

Took a short trip to sunny Kingston (just south of Hobart) and had JC check my coolant temp sensor and air flow meter on the diagnostics a few weeks after first starting this thread.

The air flow meter readings were a bit high from memory and JC quickly whipped it off the car and gave it a clean out with some contact cleaner as it was pretty dirty.

The air flow meter readings pretty much changed immediately and so I began another fuel consumption test. Nothing to serious just going by average km's from full to fuel light on.

Now over three tanks of go-go juice my land rover has averaged 695km per tank. with the best being 725km:D and the worst being about 670km which came on today. Suspect that would be using a bit more in the last week as has been bloody cold down here in Hobart and engine cooling down alot faster, more cold starts etc.

All of the tanks have been around town with no long highway trips so needless to say I am happy with the outcome.

Before I go I will just chuck a "many thanks" to JC as he has now helped me quickly and promptly on two occasions.:)

Found this thread to be relevant to my problem... A few months ago I bought a '03 diesel disco2a (auto) and it is stock standard with no mods. Recently it had a problem with loss of power - couldn't overtake on highways, couldn't climb hills, etc. But the main problem was the high fuel consumption. Looking at all the threads I thought it might be the wastegate modulator. But the mechanic traced it back to a dying fuel pump. Replaced it with a new one and the power's back but the fuel consumption is still shyte! Was getting 12-13 litres/100km but now it's going beyond 16 litres/100km (I haven't done much highway driving, mostly city driving).
I got my D2a with only 87k on the clock, seems to be underused and probably was in storage for awhile. What gives??

Just drove my new/ old 2000 TD5 Auto from albury to sydney.. i drive very easy and sat on about 95 as an average speed. Re filled and did the maths

8 liters per 100k's

Car is original and has 264,000 ks on the clock and is stock

I am pleased but ill get it better yet with exhaust mods/ air intake and tuning
