After reading your posts it would appear to me that I am using a bit to much fuel.

Even when the engine is hot the vehicle smells of quite a rich burnt diesel smell. Its an unusual smell to be honest. There are no leaks and the injector o-rings are new a new and the oil level remains regular.

I am starting to wonder if the coolant temp sensor or the air flow meter are causing excesive fuel burn. Any thoughts on this?

Anyone in TAS in the Hobart area got an OBDII scanner or nanocom etc? I would love to see the engine data when hot. I would run it down to JC but it is a bit of a drive from my house and not sure if he is there on saturday mornings (anyone know?).

I will keep you all posted on what the outcome is as I am sure that there is something going on in there.

The best fuel consumption I've been able to obtain was 9.3l/100k's in August 09 driving from Broadbeach on the Gold Coast to NSW Central Coast via Pacific Hwy. Stock standard 04 td5 auto, 114000K's with highway tyres, loaded up with car fridge, golf clubs, a couple of bags and two people using BP diesel. Haven't been able to emulate this again so far.
Found that sitting on about 108km/h obtained the best economy on the highway.

I have been getting about 10.5L per 100kms in my 2006 TD5 Defender....this is measured over the past 2000km's or so which has incuded all types of driving.

The defender is running 2.5" exhaust with no muffler, intercooler, EGR blocked, new hoses, upgraded ECU chip, new airfilter and is running 33" muddies at about 42 psi. it is a dual cab and i run with the canopy off and on and it makes little difference.

I was recomemded this fuel tracking website by some mates so will start that on the next tank as it works it all out for you based on price and filling the whole tank EVERY time you fill up. you just put in the odo reading and it does the rest. hopefully my calculations have been correct. lol

Barry is a TD5 auto standard size hwy tyres with 355,000km on the clock did 11ltr/100km around town only engine mod is the EGR removal and oils leaks (oh handg on I think tey are standard:wasntme:)

:Dthe DUCHESS has done aroud the 9l/km but recently the attendance at the bowser has not been a very happy experience---12 and better---with the price around $1.56/l I am feeling it in the back pocket. Justin the airflow meter?? How can I check this at home, Cairns is a day off away,and the only place that has a dedicated LR mechanic. By the way:02 disco with silicon hoses,standard tyres and EGR fix--all services up to date and well cared for!!!!

Alright everyone.....its seems that no-one does any diagnostics without a computer of sorts anymore (that I can find on the internet anyways)

However, does anyone on here have the voltage outputs for the air flow meter (MAF) and resistance readings for the Coolant temp sensor.

My MAF is putting out about 3.9v at approx 3000rpm (middle wire, brown with pink stripe) anyone know what the voltage readings through the rev range should be? Or where I can source the diagnostic info.

td5 def, 05, 21psi boost, straght exhurst, 33' tyres, and running just RWD at the moment,

i can easy get into the 10/100, but a avg about 10.5, just towed me ski boat 310km this 5 days and a car loaded, used just on 40Ls

i have a boost gadge in mine,,, and ever since i got that,, (after i got over the fun of watching 20+psi:D:D)

my fuel comp has goten a lil better, drive buy the boost,, i change gears most times no more then 15ish psi, and on the high way at 100kph try and keep it under 12psi, towing the boat at 100 the boost is at about 14-15 psi,

I was getting bad fuel economy, around 15-16l/100 highway could get 14 and towing the caravan it still did about 15.5, which is unusual for such little change towing an offroad van, just travelled from sunny coast to gold coast towing the van after doing headwork, all new seals on injectors, replaced broken exhaust studs, new injector loom and so on and just got a nice

19L/100km,

It's a td5 es auto with erg bypass and samco hoses, 258,000km, only change from last time towing is the headwork and new rad hoses and coolant, so to say the least I'm ****ed at this car as I've now spent 4k on it since I bought it last august and it's just getting worse, I've had 7 range rovers and this car is a real let down, and it seems to struggle towing 1.6t I'd hate to think of putting 3.5t behind it

On a trip Adelaide to Alice Springs my fill ups varied from 9 km per litre to 10.5 km per litre (sorry for wrong way round figures). Car is auto and was empty and I set the speed control at the limits. Strangely consumption at 110kph in SA was no better than consumption at 130kph in NT. I have not calculated around town but estimate 14 to 15 litre per hundred k.

since adding a 200-1 mix of two stroke oil[castrol t] i get 950km to 80 litres on a trip not quite as good around town
