Long term average for last 5yrs had been 12L/100km

Replaced FPR and since average has been 10.5-11L/100km

Just fitted new tyres (265/70 replacing 255/70) and first run out gave 11.2L/100km highway to pickup a new camper

Return trip home with camper in tow (about 1200kg) gave 13.2L/100km

Pretty happy with those figures. EGR removed & wastegate adj' to around 20psi. Rhino roof racks and 2m tray and foxwing up top.

Update ... Went to Macksville for NYE. Towing Kamper loaded, with 3 passengers and personal luggage in D2. Kamper would have weighed in around 1350-1400kg. 3rd lockup at 80km/hr (2450rpm) or 4th lockup at 85km/hr (1900rpm). Around 760 km return and averaged 12.5l/100km.

    Love my Td5 !

Do u have a speedo adjuster to compensate for ur bigger rubber? Or do U use a calculated distance?

Ive had to use a calculated distance to get any decent figures from my d2 with 265-75s.

Usually get around high 10's low 11's. No mods other than bigger rubber and EGR removal.

Calculated distance - I used the GPS to check the speed & distance against the D2's speedo & odometer, then used the tyre co-efficient setting in the nanocom to get the road speed displayed on the nanocom to match the GPS. With the new tyres I recently fitted the adjustment is spot on +6%.

Same as you ... No mods other than bigger rubber and EGR removal ... and turbo wastegate wound out for a bit more boost.

Really interesting thread. My wife has been complaining (quite a lot ) that my old ****box range rover uses far to much fuel. It does many very short trips around town ... through the bush ...... Or its towing distances on the highway. I'd guestimate it easily uses 35L/100km towing the big bunk 'van ... and 25'ishL/100 around town.

The bottom line is ............. The diesel will cost as much to run. I would get 14L/100km (minimum) reading this thread given the very short ( cold start) trips and offroad usage ..... However LPG is half the cost of diesel. So even if I'm using 28L/100kms around town .... we still break even with the diesel costwise.

Is the TD5 capable of towing a full size caravan ?

something like this? Or would you be beating the thing to death. The little V8 works hard, but it seems to thrive on it! It would need to do less than 17L/100 towing to be cheaper to run than the ****box range rover.

You might be better off with a new thread given this one is circa 2011, 8 years old now.

But my old man has a 98 3.9 V8 Disco 1 and a mate had a 2003 D2a 4.0 V8. My 02 built Td5 is a race car in comparison to both of them, even though I've got bigger tyres, roof rack, etc. I've got a VNT, intercooler and ECU remap done which have added to the power.

Mine has bad economy, always has while I've owned it though even when much closer to stock. It's about 13L per 100km that on 33" tyres, roof rack and other gear weighing in around 2.7tonne.

The thing is that a TD5 even stock has much more torque at about 2000RPM-2500RPM than a 3.9.
This was brought home to me towing my camper trailer .
There is a BIG HILL southbound on the Pacific highway just North of Buledelah NSW and my RRC dynotuned and chipped 3.9 would always drop out of lock and even back to 3rd at the top. I would start at 120 and be doing 90 at the top.

In the td5 I was amazed, amazed I tell you that if I hit the hill at the bottom at 120, then I was still doing 100 at the top and it was still in top unlocked.
Of course with a diesel you have no hope of regaining speed if some dork blocks you going up, as you can floor a 3.9 and go while the TD5 will thrash away going nowhere.
BUT while doing it my RRC would give say 17-18Lper 100Km while the TD5 use about 12.

this is what I'm towing (or a car trailer ... or a box trailer .... or low range through the bush each day)

Wow ... 17-18L/100kms ... from the v8 (yeah thats dream territory for me). I guess someday I should try driving on a trip without a few tons tied to it arse end ... The biggest issue with LPG is travelling you just cant find the dam stuff anywhere. And up north it was upwards of $1.00 a litre (lets not mention barely making 200kms before running out of gas). Diesel is certainly the way of the future. It would be interesting to know how the TD5 tows with much more than weight then a camper trailer. My experience with diesels... is once they now longer "hold" on hills. They die and you just grab the lower cog and plod along much more slowly.

I wonder if I can shove the disco III ( citroen/poogoe/territory) engine into the ****box range rover .... that would be the go

More like the way of the past... You kind of missed the boat on it a long time ago. With things such as the petrol compression ignition motors such as the Mazda Skyactiv X being developed it's starting to swing back around to petrol being the way of the future again...

It's likely possible, but what's your budget?

What's a worked 300TDI like power/torque wise? I believe they are easily bolted into a RRC (I think LR even sold the conversion kit parts) with an aftermarket VNT, free flowing exhaust, intercooler and fuel tweaks would probably pull ok and be great on fuel. I think there is also a 2.8 kit for them which would give the next level.

Before I had a Land Rover I did not have any torque wrenches. Now I have three.
