Just looked at the circuit on my rave cd and I can't see anything mentioned about an alternator in the stop/reverse light diagram.

Downloaded from this site an interesting technical data booklet from QX components, which says the following; On the Defender and Discovery TD5 models the alternator is fused thru the brake/ stop light circuit. Should the fuse for the brake lights blow the alternator will not charge, always check this fuse before replacing what appears to be a faulty alternator. Any one come across this ? Bob
Iām pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

This has been mentioned before on the forum. I think the idea for this crazy idea is this: When you depress the brake pedal the voltage drops in the brake circuit. The alternator voltage sense wire is connected here, so it senses a lower voltage and therefore increases its voltage output to the battery. This way you top up the battery whenever there is spare energy available, ie when braking. It should in theory be a slight fuel saving if the alternator doesn't keep up a high voltage during normal driving. I'd find the wretched wire and reconnect it elsewhere, with its own fuse so a failed brake light fuse doesn't lead to a flat battery. Maybe the designers never heard of Australian trailer wiring?![]()

I have read these replies and I have studied the electrical diagrams but I can't see where there is any common point between alt cct and brk cct, the only thing common is one fuse link 8 (50A) and the connection on ignition switch, but from there it is all individual fuses. Pedro mentions a 10A fuse but the brake reverse light fuse is 15A, can anyone provide me with more details.

Car running fine, then yesterday lots of light lit up on dash, 3 amigo's mates had turned up as well ! Was in slow traffic jam, and battery warning light came on every time I braked. Car then went into limp mode, nanocom would not clear anything, and said fault said cable not connected, cannot remember exact words. Charged battery overnight and started ok this morning, and on nanocom volts hovered between 11.50 to 12.5, no amigo's or other lights.
I had an alternator problem about 6 months back, bought new brushes and regulator and has worked perfectly ever since. I am hoping it might be the rear brake lights have blown a bulb ? Fingers crossed when I have a look later this evening as really do not want to be on hook for $550, and strange as just happened all very quickly.
Dont hope to have a blown bulb cos the only thing resulting from that would be that you'll be one bulb shorter... the brake lamps circuit has nothing to do with the charging circuit other than the brake lamps are a noticeable load and if the charging is gone the voltage will drop more as to trigger the warning lamps...
measure the voltage directly on the battery with multimeter cos with such kind of voltages on the battery with engine running your problem is with the alternator or it's circuit nothing else... if you'll have good voltage on the battery just low on nanocom we'll speak againvolts hovered between 11.50 to 12.5, no amigo's or other lights.
Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned
Thanks Sierrafery, interestingly I noticed the evening when I got out the car, engine off, the voltage on Nanocom had crept up to 12.10v and was holding there, which has now got me all confused. It stayed in the ā11āsā for the 20 minute journey up to that point.
will get the multi-meter on it tomorrow.
