Just as you said!
Another tweak is to use what we call "roo shooter" globes or horizontal filament GL6 globes. The vertical filaments don't make full use of the reflector only emitting a radius of 180 degrees into it. The horizontal filament reflects a full 360 degrees emitting far more light back to the reflector.
With either globe another trick is to not push them all the way into the socket. Pull them back out by about the thickness of a fingernail.
