Removing the sump plug should stop the leak Aaron
Best of luck, hopefully there is an easy fix.
Andrew
Hi,
I have a new oil leak on my 2002 d2 td5 169,000km that has been hard to track down.
Sent to my mechanic today, steam cleaned and it seems to be coming from drivers side head gasket.not the rocker cover...
He has tried some silastic as temp measure however advised me that I may need to take the head off to rectify. Best before any damage is done, i have an engine saver and have not overheated the engine as of yet. It is only oil leaking.
I am no mechanic and have left servicing to my mechanic every 10,000, he was owner from new before me.
Any thoughts? Before I undertake this expensive exercise....![]()

I was looking at a fellow memebers TD5 doing a simmilar thing on the weekend
He is getting oil on the rear of his alt. and along the block too.
Our first thought was a leak from the cam plug blowing back but it's sealed OK.
Need to pull his now dissusedEGR cooler off to look further but not much left other than the gasket to leak
Is the oil hose to the alt. OK?
It's high on the timing case just bellow the head, worth a look anyway.
Aaron,
I would be suprised if its the head gasket leaking oil. where on the engine is it running down? it could be diesel from the fuel pressure regulator.
Roger
Might be worth looking a little more carefully.
recently 2 Td5's I have seen with this same symptom have been leaking inlet manifold gaskets. The oil is coming from the recirculation of oil mist through the intake system and gets forced out of the failed inlet manifold gasket under boost, running down the block.
The same thing happens with the 300Tdi funnily enough.

Hi Andrew,
Yes I have fitted the provent. Damn fine job by myself and Landyandy!
Going to try and have a better look tomorrow.... damn hard to see around the drivers side towards the front. Will check out the inlet manifold gasket....
Hi Roger! Replaced the fuel regulator only a couple of thousand clicks ago second since I have had it...
Thanks for the help! Will update again tomorrow...
Aaron.
Aaron,
let me know if you want an extra pair of eyes to have a look for the source of the leak.
Roger
As one of the owners Alien D2 was referring to, I did a bit more investigating on the weekend and now believe the prob is as Tombie describes, My intake manifold is the source of the oil it had a few loose bolts and on doing them up noticed a small increase in power and time will tell if the oil stops leaking??
This is fairly important to fix as a leak in this area ends up on the rear of the alternator, destroying the brushes and damaging the commutator and in my case has already resulted in having to replace it. Not cheap!!
I have a provent but have not had time to fit it yet, and I think will replace the manifold gasket as well.
The thing I found with blanking the EGR is that the intake became noticeably oilier within a few weeks. Not to say more oil was coming thru but most likely due to no exhaust soot to soak it up with. Once the Provent went on and the intercooler and hoses were cleaned out the halo around the manifold gaskets stopped. I didn't actually remove the manifold and clean it as I was short on time to do the whole thing.
So yes, this may well be a likely source but as I discussed with Aaron on the phone, it can also be the rear of the rocker cover gasket also. Hard to really say without having a look myself but all worth a look.
