I'm presently running 235/85r16's on my D2, but you'll need to check local legal regulations and tyre sizes in your area.
A number of other forumites are running this also.
The other option for a bit more width but almost the same diameter would be the 265/75r16's.

    Some pics at this link

edit: Mines also running +2" springs, but with original shocks. No trimming required.

    Cheers,

I put 37s on mine. hehe. It's a relative question. Depends on where you're going. I wouldn't go out on anything less than 35s these days and even then you're going to diff out on plenty of tracks. I spend most of my time in Warburton/bunyip/toolangi and wombat. The problem is all the people running around on 37s and 38.5's these days with no respect and no skills. Set the vehicle up for 35's.

    This calculator should assist you.
Tyre Size Calculator @ ExplorOz Articles

The bigger your diameter the more likely you'll have to trim guards, etc as far as I understand. I have seen reference to 245/70 16 as the largest size that can be fitted without modifying anything.

That calculator also shows the likely speedo error too IIRC.

Careful on that link.....it's a chart for the D1's ('89-'98), as stated at the top of the page.
    Different rules for the D2.
