    Split second rattle on start

    TD5 2003 D2a.

When the engine fires on cold start, I can hear, for less than a second, a very noticeable short rattle from the front as if something is spinning up to speed. Thereafter, just the usual diesel engine sounds. Is this normal?

There are no noises on shutdown, but if it's really quiet a very faint whir can sometimes be heard for a couple of seconds after the engine stops turning.

I suspect this is not normal, but don't want to be on a wild goose chase looking at Harmonic balancers, viscous hub bearings and handbrakes which a short search seems to indicate - if there's no problem!

The rattle at start up could be a few things. Thermo fan, fan support bearing, , harmonic balancer......

The very faint whir or spinning down noise at shut down will be the rotor oil filter, they spin at I think 15000 rpm,, some can be heard, some can't and it makes no difference what brand you use, some do and some don't.

My '03 used to have a momentary diesel rattle on cold morning startups. I wondered if it may have been caused by #5 cylinder not having a glow plug.

I discovered my annoying start up rattle on my D2 V8 was the tin plate that protects the cats. They are tack welded at each end.

Not sure if the TD5 exhausts also have these.

But at first I thought it was the a problem with the SLS, then I noticed the tack weld had snapped .It Made a hell of a racket when starting, but went away as the engine warmed up

Pull the ABS fuse & see if the rattle on startup stops, If it does you will know its the ABS pump.
