Thread: D2 Rear Audio Controls

Have you got the CD changer under the drivers seat? If so, there are a couple of devices that replace the cd changer with a cable that connects to your iPod/iPhone, and allows it to be controlled from the steering wheel controls. Mine's from Grom audio, and works a treat. the only thing you see is a thin cable coming out from under the handbrake lever with an iPod plug on the end. iPod then sits next to the auto t-bar on the centre console. You can set up 6 playlists, and they replace the 6 cds. Love it.

Helped out heaps, kind of looks like I'm going to lose the rear entertainment though, seems there isn't anything available to keep them working with an aftermarket HU

Unfortunately, it's the head unit I have the problem with, not the stacker, Thought I would get shot of the stacker as the head unit has all but died, and try and keep the rear entertainment controls for the kids but it looks like it's a lost cause on them.

There's a seller on eBay UK selling Brand New Head Units for £35.00

He says that they're Australian High Line Spec. -

I saw those on ebay last night, problem is, I would still have no ipod/iphone/mp3 playability , and it looks like it will be near on $100 delivered to buy one, not much less than the price of a decent spec'd aftermarket one.

Looks like I might forgo the factory unit and fit something DVD compatible and chuck a couple of screens in the back for the tribe, so the 3rd row munchkins don't whinge about nowhere to plug their headphones in

either way, I think I just figured out that this is going to get expensive.

Easy my friend, just have a look around, it's not hard, try the Pioneer DEH-5250SD at $129.95, thats the one I've got spare anyway,

Alright, here's some info from my experience that may help you out.

I purchased my 2003 Disco HSE with the CD stacker already removed and the original headunit replaced with a Kenwood one.

In relation to the rear audio controls - these will only connect and work with a factory headunit. They're a Land Rover designed item and each side has it's own special plug that fits into the factory headunit. There are no aftermarket headunits that offer these connections.

In relation to connecting an aftermarket headunit up to the factory amplifier/sound system (what ever the HK 8 speaker system is called [has the amplifier under the passenger seat, tweeters in the a pillars, speakers in all four side doors and dual woofers in the rear door]) - the connection is not via RCA cable. Instead it uses the speaker connection. But it would seem that you need to use an inline interpreter box to drop the level down (otherwise I suspect that you may cause damage to the amplifier by sending a high level when it wants a low). Now in relation to having the steering wheel controls functioning on a non-factory headunit. So far I have yet to find anyone that has successfully achieved this. There is a lot of places that offer the adapters, but no one seems to have one working...
My car came with the InCarTec brand unit connected to the Kenwood unit. The steering wheel controls did not work.
I have since changed the headunit to an Alpine one (as I wanted inbuilt bluetooth and better iPod control), I got the Alpine patch lead from InCarTec, still does not work.
I am currently eyeing off PAC's universal offerings - Pac-Audio.com Product Search | iPod Integration for your car and More by Pac-Audio - Connecting you to the future

EDIT: a bit of reading (of the HU replacement thread someone linked above on p. 2-3) and it seems a few people have got the PAC units to work. Both the SWI-Jack and SWI-X have been confirmed as working. I prefer the idea of the hardwired unit to the infrared personally.
