I have, like a good boy, searched the forums but can't find any answers so here's another new thread.
I have a D2 04 TD5 Disco with a 76mm ECB Alloy (5mm Alloy) nudge bar on the front and want to fit a recovery point. I have used successfully, those recovery hooks from places like Super****Auto before and can't seem to find a recovery point from Outback Ideas for it, so does anyone know:
1. Where I can attach a simple SCA recovery hook to the front?
2. Any aftermarket manufacturers of recovery points that will suit my Disco?
Any advice would be great, except comments about horses or Uncle Jack (note the use of capitals).
There are a number of threads on the issue of recovery points. The information I was given on recovery points is that to be safe, you need to reinforce the connection point to the chassis if you are fitting a recovery point otherwise it can just rip out.
I reinforced the standard on road recovery point at front of vehicle and also the chassis point. Not cheap.
I am not aware of any after market recovery points with assurances for off road use.
I've just had recovery points fitted to my '04 TD5 D2. I had a look around, and philco's points were the best DIY option for me, but I ended up getting MR Automotive to fit some, so they used their own.
From what I understand, the the points that I got, & the ones that philco sells are attached in the same spot as your wombat bar. You'd need a lot of force to pull the points out of the chassis, the kind of force that could only be achieved if you were being stupid during a recovery (e.g. getting a run up in the other car) and/or using the wrong equipment (e.g. over rated straps) IMO.
Remember: you should always use an equalizer strap for snatching, because that'll halve the stress for each side.
Barney,
Follow up on previous post, I've attached a photo of the reinforced recovery point. Basically a 'U' shaped plate was welded on under the recovery ring and a reinforcing plate welded in between the sides of the bracket to strengthen the overall stiffness of the bracket and the connection of the recovery ring to the bracket itself. Also replaced existing bolts with high tensile bolts. After doing the upgrade, I was advised to reinforce the chassis connection point. Decided it wasn't worth the risk not to do so.
I'm sorry the picture isn't better but it was awkward to photo without taking off the bracket.
