    THEY WORK!

Well after a lot of stuffing around, I went to have a look at another D2a and low and behold, there is no relay in the lower slot which has an icon showing the engine with a lightning bolt through it, there IS one in the Window slot however.
Well, with my heart in my mouth (and fred Smith standing by ) I swapped the relay from the engine to the windows, turned the ignition on (without starting the engine) and WooHoo...the rear windows worked!
Next step, started the car.... no warning lights appeared. Been driving it now since last Friday and absoutely no problems at all. It appears that some bright spark put the relay back into the wrong hole....can you believe it?
Anyway, a HUGE thanks to Biggin for his advice which led me to check the relay in the first place. Thanks to all the other respondents too.

Oh, Kendra (shepherd x lab) is delighted as well
