Some engines rotate clockwise, others anticlockwise. Then there is the type of fan belt and how they drive the fan.

V-belts drive the fan in the same direction the engine rotates (using the V of the belt). A serpentine belt usually drives the fan from the smooth (back side) of the belt so the fan will rotate in the opposite direction to the engine.

The fan HAS to unscrew in the same direction that fan rotates.

If it didn't, the fan could unscrew when the engine is running.

    Think about it.
    THAT'S TELLING THEM!

Does that mean the same direction as taking a lid off a coke bottle?

What direction does a coke bottle thread go in?

Is it dependant upon whether it is being removed or replaced as to whether the thread is moving clockwise or anti clockwise??

Isn't It different if you are in the Northern Hemisphere or the Southern Hemisphere?
I understand it unscrews in the opposite direction.

And what if you're facing the opposite way? Generally engines will rotate clockwise as you face the crank pulley, but some serpentine belt arrangements will have the fan running in the opposite direction to engine rotation.

So, TD5 rh thread, tdi & V8 lh tread. For fear of repetition, look at the way the fan rotates..

Is the coke bottle half full or half empty, is it "look how much has been drunk" or "look how much is left?"

Thanks for all this advice, but being simple can I ask just two simple questions which closes this off (for me)

    1. To remove the Fan, which way does one first tap the lock nut. Towards the nr side or drivers side?
    2. After the lock nut is loosened, does the fan unscrew anticlockwise (when viewed from the front)?

    Thanks

Well it depends, you see. Have you tried the trick of observing the fan's direction of rotation? Observation is a powerful tool, it would then indicate that you tap the fan spanner in the same direction. Go on, try it and see.

Depends whether one is tapping the spanner from the top, or from underneath, then you would be tapping the opposite way.
