Just driveline backlash by the sound of it.
Just as the multiple connections through the entire driveline take up their tolerances.
Hi all, i'm so new I don't even have a disco yet but i found one i like. Problem is, in low range this car gives a clunk (not too loud but noticable) on acceleration. Once I'm going i can floor it with no noise. If i back off then accelerate again (gently) I get rewarded byt another clunk. wont do it in high range. I'm guessing it's transfer case related and $$$. Just wondering if there are any other common faults that your collective knowledge might be aware of. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Vehicle is 2000 td5 auto 250k K's

Thanks Tombie, sounds reassuring. Just concerned about no noise in high range though.

I had this recently.... For me it was my front drive shaft uni. You can see when theyre flogged out.... especially when the roller bearings have dropped out half way across fraser island. dont worry though, it will keep going. 2 weeks longer on the island and a drive back to melbourne haha. Otherwise the transfer case does have abit of backlash....
i recently bought a set of 5 uni joints to replace all mine, there dident apear to be any thing wrong with them but when i took off the front drive shaft there was alot of free play in it that was hard to notice when it was still on. my friend had a series 2 disco the front drive shaft broke at the transfer case end and when it came loose smashed a hole in his auto transmission !!!! hence me changine my unis, on my manual gear box there is about 4 inchs more clearance from the shaft to the box but still considering building a blow up safty cage for it. ( cheep insurance)
i have removed the front shaft locked the center diff and am driving the car around still wile i rebuild the front shaft , then you guessed it remove the rear. as it looks i have a clunk or large notabul free play that has seemed to trace back to the transfer case. looks like about 30 deg rotationany one elts experence this ?
Thanks for the input lads. I decided to give the td5 a miss, ended up getting a low K's '03 V8 which had been used as a shopping trolley, I'm very happy with it so far. Near where i live there is a area where bikes and 4x4's get to play, it compares well with my old 60 series diesel in the sand, but with more style and comfort.![]()
