Thread: TD5 engine seized

    Engine ceased ?

I am new to the "group" - and was wondering if someone could help me.
My TD5 series II started a nasty oil leak while I was away on interstate business. My wife drove the vehicle for a while and did not report the oil light coming on.

One evening it appeared that the matter became worse and quite noisy.

The vehicle was driven home - having been topped up with oil.

I returned to inspect the vehicle and found that the oil filter adjacent the turbo was hanging on by one thread - hence the loss of oil.

I changed the filter - filled up the sump and all appeared ok for a few KM's until a knocking noise developed.

The knocking noise went away and then returned with a vengeance.

The oil light did not come on and the vehicle appeared to lack some power.

The knocking noise developed into a nasty baning sound and the vehicle stopped.

The starter will not turn the engine - but equally I have not tried to push the vehicle while in gear to see if the motor has actually ceased or not.

Is this curtains to an otherwise perfect relationship with my Disco.

    Hi DM,

Sorry to hear of your problems.

This section, however is for Series Land Rovers (1948 - 1984), so you may want to ask the mods to move it to the Disco 2 section so you get more replies.

In the meantime, have a search for "oil pump bolt" or words to that effect, to read about common TD5 problems which may help you.

    Hi DM,
You need to look a little further down the forum, as this spot is for Series 2 and 2a Landies, not Doscoveries.

In the meantime, don't drive your disco, don't even try and start it...!

    Doesn't sound good.

If the oil filter was loose and it pumped all the oil out its not going to be directly related to the oil pump bolt mentioned above (although the resultant damage will be very similar).

I would suggest that low oil level / pressure as a result of the leak has done significant internal damage.

    good luck.

    TD5 engine seized

Greetings...I'm new to the group and I have posted a similar message earlier today - so apologies if any of you have read it previously.

    I have a 99 series II TD5

Recently it developed a nasty oil leak. I was away interstate and so my wife may not have noticed the problem.

One evening all hell broke loose and she told me that smoke and steam were pouring out and as a result she had get my son to meet her with 4lt of oil so that she drive the vehicle home.

I returned home and found that the oil filter was hanging on by a thread - hence the oil leak.

Seemingly the oil light had not come on until the whole smoke and steam incident.

I fitted a new filter and filled the sump with oil.

    All appeared good.

Then after a few KM's there was a knocking noise....the knocking got worse and then went away.

I though it may have been a lifter or injector.

The noise re appeared and after a few KM's more got much worse and then the vehicle simply stopped.

I have towed the vehicle home and there it rests.

My mechanic said "sounds like a ceased motor - they can't be rebuilt - buy a good secondhand motor" and then gave me a number which I assumed was his mobile number - but was actually the quote !!

If anyone out there has any clues as to how to assess whether the TD5 is dead - I'd be very grateful.

The starter will not turn - and I have not tried moving the car in gear.

    Ooooh dear.
Sounds like it is well fried.
There was a TD5 advertised on this site or on Ebay a few months ago i think it was $2500.
Pretty sure a complete rebuild on yours will be $8k+.
Who installed the last oil filter?
I have never heard of a correctly installed filter just undoing its self.

    Oooooh Dear X 2

I'd be going back to whoever did the last service. You might not get anywhere but at least you'll get to vent your spleen... who knows, they might offer to at least FIT a replacement motor. You can live in hope anyway

I actually heard from a landy mechanic that td5's have been known to screw off their own oil filters at around the 10k mark - which was why he recommended 10k oil changes. Anyone heard this before?

And sorry to hear about the disco. Thats pretty crappy.
