D2 v D1

:DI'm a td5 owner love the car. It has inherent problems but when off road it is brilliant----I don't go to off road driving parks---places in the cape where i fossick are quite isolated and rough but the D2 does it easily. Towing a boat,tailer or van is no trouble. Long distances are done with ease and comfort. Mine is a 02 TD5 the mods are:2" lift bullbar side steps tow bar and the oil leaks and diesel pressure relief valve leaks are free,the car has done 160,000km and is fine oil changes were every 5th to start with now every 10. by the way a snorkel is essential..thats my two-bobs worth...

The Td5 is also much less complex than a petrol V8, both mechanically and electronically. The Td5 has plenty of torque at idle. In fact I find it is better with your foot off the accelerator and let the ECU do all the work.

as the TD5 was an all new design for the D2 and the V8 powered the Ark (only needed one:angel:) I dont think that last statement is quite right,,
The fuel system alone on the Td5 has 27 computers to keep all the bits running,,

Nope, just one, and it has less to do than the one in the V8! It just puts the fuel in the engine. It doesn't have to tell it when to burn it. :p

Edited to add, I have both a 2003 v8 and a 2001 td5(def). They are both good, but the V8 is more complicated, and more difficult to work on than the TD5 IME

It is a lot quieter and smoother, but they are really the only 2 advantages of the v8 I can see comparing ours.

personally I prefer to work on the TD5's and I might be able to swing you a drive in my sisters sludgeboxes TD5D2.

some bits for the TD5 are a lot pricier than the same bits for the v8 but then you dont have to replace them as often and you dont fill the td5 up anywhere near as often either.

you also pay less for rego.

sure, the v8 sounds nice but its like politics, the ones that make the best sounds are usually the ones least suited to the job.

Yeah, I think you are right. I need to drive a diesel up a sand hill and see how it performs.

I'm not sold on the idea of addressing maintenance issues on my D1. Unfortunately, when maintenance issues arise, I am usually far from home. I don't like that feeling

The truth is that at nearly 300k the D1 has lots of bits that are now worn and prone to breakage. Not saying that a D2 won't break, just that it will be less likely to break.

I might even keep the D1 as a "play" car and use the D2 for round the city and touring.

This morning I woke up to my D2 having the leans... :o:o:o Fortunately I have already pre-stocked with a pair of replacement air bags in the garage.

Yesterday I noticed at the traffic lights that the car was pumping up and settling and I thought it odd as I hadn't noticed it before.

Going outside now to work on the D2, isn't that what all LR owners do on a Sunday.:wasntme:

yeah, because at 290K Km landrovers just start magically falling apart.

no ones ever taken a landy thats more that 10 years old with more than 300k on it anywhere other than the garage to get it fixed.

you should on no account think of taking any landrover thats out of warranty anywhere.

ANY act of taking an old landy anywhere is probably a desperate act of a pitiful fool at the end of his rope (yes, a movie quote).

A person's perception of the relative merits of the V8 vs TD5 may depend on whether its manual or an automatic transmission. I've had a manual V8 D2 and now (still) a manual TD5 D2a. At idle revs (750 to 1000RPM) the V8 eats the TD5. So off road, when you want to crawl/idle up something the V8 was better. Once over 1400RPM however the TD5 comes into its own. I've had my TD5 're chipped' (is re mapped the more correct term?) and it improved its low end performance significantly but still no match for the V8. The rechipping greatly improved peak torque and power in the TD5 and it's now fantastic to drive. So for that and many of the other comments above, I still prefer the 2004 TD5 over my earlier V8.
