D2 v D1

Give that man Mundy a cigar... I have driven auto and manual v8's, tdi's and td5's. Without doubt the 5 speed manual v8 eats them all. Hence why I bought one new in 02. Never looked back. Run it on LPG. I also have a 95 d1 auto v8 which I love but it does not compare offroad to my d2 with cdl and traction control. Mate look around for a coil sprung 5 speed man v8 and it's a simplE reliable truck that goEs like stink, gets actually quite good economy and just feels special compared to rattlers and are much more fun than the autos. TD5 power..... 101kw@4200 rpm


V8 torque..... 320 nm@ 2600 rpm
TD5torque.....315 nm@ 1950 rpm


So, a TD5 chipped, with the lower gearing mod to the transfer case,[ low range ist gear], awesome! depends on whether you want to be sedate and smelly,or loud and obnoxious,Bob :wasntme:

I'm interested in getting a lower first gear so would love to know what's involved in a getting a first gear low range change. I'd have thought that in changing the gearing in the transfer box, either all low range gearing would change or first gear low and high range would change. What are the different gearing options? I would prefer not to change the high range gearing other than first gear. Who in Sydney does it and does anyone have an idea of the costs?

Yes I think that's a wise move...

As Ron (RSCHIPP) will hopefully attest, on a play day at Lancelin earlier this year, I think I was the only diesel (apart from Dave's flying D4)...

Mine is auto and I'd prefer manual but the auto is quite helpful in sand and I (allegedly) have a 140kw chip. I think old 2ROCKS did a pretty good job against the V8's - getting a bit of air over the crests and so on :p

My biggest issue was not using enough right foot and my (full) long range tank, which turned the back-end into a grader on steep approach angles...but I still got over in the end :). Just a question of adjusting your technique. Mike's V8 D1 went everywhere, but has big-ish suspension and he's not afraid of a few steel bruises :D

I had a V8 D1 and a V8 D2 also - the Td5 is only one I still own...but that's my take on things ;)

I have a (4.6) V8 2000 D2 auto. Went away with a few others last weekend up to Airlie (sp) gap and was the only V8 and Auto there. Filled up on leving home and on return at same point, used 46.5L for just over 400k's combined hwy and low range. That alone alays my biggest fear I had, how much extra fuel to take.

As for a D1 v D2 and where they'll go. My father has a V8 D1 as modded as mine (2" lift/winch, I also have slider steps) and after driving it I wouldn't consider taking it up there by comparison. The TC alone and V8 at just off idle locked in 1st crawls and judicious use of right foot gets it further.

Are you sure about that? Thats 11.6 L/100km's - TD5 figures

In my opinion for what it is worth if you look at standard or near standard D1's compared to similar spec D2's then those D2's with CDL should be quite a bit better off road than a similar spec D1.

However give them both the same body and suspension lift,
Similar spec shocks,
Front and rear bars to improve ramp angles,
Same size and spec tyres and rims with similar off sets.
The same overall gearing.
Fit both with front and rear lockers and I bet the D1 will go many more places then the heavier and much longer D2.

If you have one of the D2 year models without CDL and still had all the same mods as mentioned above then unfortunately you would struggle even more.

The other bonus is the D1 is much cheaper to buy and modify as second hand off road parts are reasonably plentiful and cheap, as are highly modded D1's when they pop up for sale. On the opposite side a good D2 is much nicer vehicle all round, is more comfortable to drive on road and a V8 D2 uses much less petrol then a 3.9 D1.

Personally I reckon a good idea is to have a highly modded D1 for bush bashing and a good near sandard D2 for a daily driver.

Now theres an idea ...;)
