Thread: Time for Tyres

Seems like everyone has their own preferences when it comes to tyres. Every post on tyres comes up with this conclusion.

I'm leaning to the Pirelli Scorpion ATRs for my next set, even though I currently have Michellin (on the LR D2a when I bought it) and have used Maxxis on all of our cars for the past 10 or more years when it comes to replacement. I put Maxxis Bravo 751 on the 1987 Range Rover way back when they were relatively new to the Australian market (I believe). They were better than the Yoko Super Digger Vs that were on it (quieter, better grip etc) and at a very good price.

4WD Action did a review of a few tyres in their last edition, so you can use that for some other opinions (BTW, Pirelli came out on top, but Cooper came second!).

Put Pirelli Scorpion ATR's on my Pathfinder....was impressed with their performance. On road and Off...Sand, Stockton Beach and at the Watagan's.

Would happily put them on again...and will be looking to do that when the current 18's are worn. Will run two sets...one for on road...Pirelli Scorpion ATR's and one for off roading...not sure what sort thou.
I dont believe the current Coopers ATR's I have on are as good as the Pirelli Scorpion ATR's. Cannot comment about ST etc.

In put 265/70R16 on my 04 Disco when I got it. They look substantially bigger and the ride is very nice. They are only cheap Silverstones (by Bridgestone) and I paid $175 fitted for each tyre. I just did the Border Track between Pinaroo and Bordertown (SA/VIC) and it went soooooooooooooooo good I was really happy and my tyres are only highway tyres.

I put 245/75 R16 Maxxis Bighorns on about 15,000kms ago. Great wear and surprisingly quiet for a mud tyre. They fit nicely without a lift. I only went the muddies because the AT 751's were not available at the time.

I just bought some 245/70/16 BFG AT's.

They are real quiet, and they wear really well. Not what i would call cheap though! But you can get a fair price reduction if you pay in cash and buy all at once!

I went the BFG because they came so highly recommended. I was tossing up between them and the Scorpion ATR's which are also really highly recommended.

My speedo is now out by 1%, which is nothing really.

Pirelli ATRs, you won't look back.

I'm a 75/25 type of user and reccomend Pirelli ATR's, quiet with super grip on the wet black top, and grip in mud exceeds the what might be expected from just looking at the tread pattern.

The LT version provides for greater strength if you do a lot of driving when loaded up off road.

There is an increasing body of reports that Coopers under perform, search for the info about them delaminating.

Indeed everyone has their own opinion on tyres and no one tyre manufacturer polarises people like cooper. My first set of ST's on my 110 ute delaminated (5 years ago). Got rid of them. However after driving around Oz for the last 18 months I put 45,000 kms on a set of ST's on my wagon and didnt even get one flat tyre. Be careful of what you read and the time it was written. I have been told that coopers stopped the delamination problem at least 3 years ago - and you never hear reports on tyres from happy users - only the negative gets heard!

The most important thing to do with any LT tyre is to rotate and balance it. I get mine done regardless of brand every 10,000kms without fail. LT tyres are heavy and if they are even a little out of round/balance, you will lose many thousands of kays of potential wear. And ......

I'll hop off my soapbox. I have 235/70 in bridgestone 694's on my D2. They are a good tyre but not light truck construction (they don't do it in that size). Next I am heading for some cooper ST Maxx in 245/75 as Im planning on doing the canning or the simpson next year and do not trust standard passanger tyres to last.

EDIT - 255 tyres will fit on a 7inch rim (which is standard for 235 tyres) but I think they are better on an 8 inch.
