Hello, I have been researching buying a 4WD for the last 6 months now and have settled on buying a Disco 2. I'm looking at a TD5 2000-2004 for around the 20k mark mainly for use as a tow vehicle for a 24ft Bayliner, occaisional camping trips and as a day to day car. I have read a lot of books and magazine articles but would prefer to hear some info from the horses mouth as most reporting is heavily biased both for and against.
I know there is a considerable amount of mechanical/structural and cosmetic changes that occurred during this period and am leaning heavily towards a 03/04 model but am open to opinion from those who drive them.
I'm currently based in Townsville and plan to buy on posting to either Sydney or Brisbane when I return from overseas.
Thanks for your time.

Go the update 03+ td5's, rumor has it that LandRover made 700+ changes from the previous -02 (Diff lock Back), I still have my 98tdi auto disco 1 that i bought bran new(soft spot for our shared 300,000k), and shes literally my hard core desert rat now, cooper STTs et al
but i bought my 2003 td5 auto 2nd hand with 74000k on it, in 09, changed a fair bit on it but if you allow some bucks to start with, to do whats needed up front it should be all good, make sure you test drive more than two!!
i donedid- Maf, throttle position sender, thermostat, injector harness, dpchip, straight through exhaust, K&N filter,
needs fuel reg replace, Egr kit on its way,
personally i find many drive afraid they are going to break them, the guys having the best run from these trucks drive them like they're stolen and aren't afraid to have a personal tinker,
Mines now done 135k and getting better every time i get init, that lumpy 5cyl sounds aws 4000rpm +
i used to own an 05 V8 Cruiser auto on Mpi Vapour lpg (my daly with the dark side 05-09) but i have more pride of ownership with the Rovers

2 years ago, my 2002 TD5 auto base model, but with 3 DVD players, cost me $12,000 privately. It needed nothing spent in first 12 months. Your $20,000 should be plenty. I am very happy with the motor performance, economy and reliability. It is noisy compared to other makes. Mine has no diff lock and it really needs it, despite the traction control working well. I recommend avoiding the years with no diff lock.
