I've never had to do it, but i would think you may have to remove the entire oil pump (the massive aluminium casting the full length of the sump) to make it easier to get out. (Make access easier anyway)
I would hazard a guess that you will have more damage that just the broken bolt to worry about though so the engine will have to come apart / out?
What happened when it failed. Did you notice and turn it off quickly or did it stop itself

Strange for that bolt to shear like that.
Maybe it had loosned a little and was under more stress than it could take???
Drill and easy out is probibly answer as to how to get the rest of it out.
It will be hard to do in the place with little access.
I read of a bloke who comes out to do this sort of thing(broken studs ect.), I think he was in Bris., others may know.

Just getting on the freeway, not pushing it at all just cruising up to about 80 and glanced at the speedo and on comes the oil light! pulled over in a hurry and turned it off... Checked oil level everything was perfect checked wire for oil pressure sensor then started it again stuck my head under and heard some rattling noises, I knew straight away what had happened...
Only thing I felt was the D2 increased in power when the oil light came on apart from that u wouldn't know of it happening unless u see ur oil light.... Which I have heard ppl don't notice ... For awhile...
How on earth do u get the sump out?? The diff is in the way majorly....

You need to jack the car body up from the axle - you should be able to get enough space. I used a bottle jack to do it.
So its possible?
I will try tomorrow when i can see it more clearly...

Spoke to one mechanic and he said just get the bolt back in and it should be right :angel:
Check this out for tips on sump removal etc to access the bolt.
Replace the oil pump bolt in a TD5

Apparently this fault was (mainly?) restricted to a certain range of VIN / engine numbers.... I looked it up once: there was a technical bulletin (which I can't find anymore)
Question is, does anyone have real experience of this actually happening in a vehicle outside of the dodgy range?
Mine's a 2003 D2a TD5 auto with 178000km
Would it not have happened already?
Should I really be worried?
Is it worth the aggravation of dropping the sump, just for the peace of mind?
I know the precautionary principle applies - I should check it out to be sure - but its not a trivial matter, and I don't want to waste time, money and knuckle skin unless the experts on here advise that its necessary - hence the question
