Replacing Shock absorbers OEM or Other?

We are nearing the end of our 17000Km trip towing the campervan and the rear shockers have given up. It is a 2000 TD5 with rear air suspension. THe car does mostly towing boat and caravan and is stock standard. SHould i put in the OEM shocks or are there better options on the market my main objective is the towing in comfort.

    Shock absorbers

    Hi Nankas

I had adjustable Koni's on the rear of my 1999 es and even on the lowest setting found them to be quite harsh. When the front originals went I changed the whole lot to Bilsteins. These appear to be better suited for the air suspension and they definately give you a more comfortable ride. Even when towing.

Thanks Grumpy, any reason you didn't put oem's in and how long did your originals last.

    Hi Nankas

The rear about 160000k. Fronts around 190000k. The Koni's were on the rear for about 30000k. The old girl has now done 260000 and am happy with the way the Bilsteins are performing.
I should also mention that there has been a lot of serious corrugation work included in the original shockies.

Just replaced the OEM shocks as well. Went with Terra Firma shocks, vast improvement over the worn out factory jobs. Cost about $130 each plus fitting.

I would think any of the aftermarket ones would be better suited to towing, factory stuff is mainly geared toward giving a nice ride when the car is empty.

    Cheers,

The original front shocks in my D2 started leaking at around 70000kms. That's when I bought it ... it was in showroom condition and had never left the northern beaches in Sydney.
My mechanic suggested TerraFirma shocks but when I told him that I could get Bilsteins from the US for around the same money ... it was a no brainer!
They've been in for around 20000kms now and I can't fault them.
I'm about to do a trip to Lake Eyre and am confident they'll be up to the job.
