    Leaky turbo?

    Hi all,
A problem developed in the Disco (TD5) today, first day of holidays would you know. I think I know what it might be but would like the confirmation that I might be right or wrong.

The engine has developed a whooshing (SWMBO description) or perhaps with a slightly gravelly overtone, from about 1900rpm up. Gets worse as revs and right boot increases. Loud enough to hear in the cabin while driving. Power seems okay, but fuel use has gone way up.

I'm thinking that it sounds like a small leak in the air hose, post turbo, hence it gets worse as air pressure increases as the turbo kicks in. I'm hoping that it's not the turbo itself. Opinion anyone?

I've got about another 400km from Hervey Bay to Brisbane to do over the next few days. Anyone know a decent Landy mechanic anywhere inbetween?

Most likely one of the turbo hoses are cracked or need tightening, it should be easy to identify... U could mimic the problem stationary though u will need someone to rev the td5 from 1000rpm to lets say 3000rpm on and off stick ur head under the bonnet and you should hear and see where the problem pipe is... Also u should see oil residue from the crack or lose hose... If the hose is broken then go down to a super crap or auto barn or where ever they sell silicon hoses though it will be hard to get the right one you might have to patch it up some how..

    best of luck

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Found it! It was the hose on the intake to the intercooler. Is that hose from turbo to intercooler normally in 3 parts???
The old rescue tape is helping, but will be replaced tomorrow if I can get to Andersons or the shop in Maryborough. Will post a picture of split hose later on, but split was maybe 3 or 4 cm long!

    Here's the offender

And a big thanks to the Landrover specialists in both Maryborough (Jack at The Landrover Shop - for advice and a good chat) and in Gympie (Gold City Land Rover - for the hose, and not making me reverse my D2 and caravan back on to the Bruce Highway).

For future reference, one layer of rescue tape won't hold the turbo hose together, but three layers did the trick for the 80k from Poona to Gympie. The new hose was much better.

Part no PNH102121, $55. Mine is a 2000 D2, MY01. apparently if it had been 6 months younger (MY00), it is a slightly different hose, and would have cost about $250! Go figure.
