I lost the spare key for my 1999 Disco II TD5 and am trying to replace it, without being ripped off by a dealership.
I have found another key on eBay that looks identical. I will need to get a blank cut for my car which should not be a problem for any locksmith.
Then I need to get the car programmed to work with the code in the replacement key.
The problem is that my dealership tells me I need a security code trhat was on a tag that was attached to the key when it was sold. I purchased the vehicle 2nd hand 10 years ago and the previous owner did not give me any key tags. The code was never stapled to my manual, as advised by the dealership.
My dealership has informed me that he can do nothing. The implication is that If I lose the remaining key I will have to dump the vehicle.
I find this very difficult to believe, not only because I am a radio engineer and I understand how these things should work, but because it must be a common problem that could not possibly have no solution.
At the very least he should have advised me how to disable the immobilizer so I could use the car without the radio key.
However, I can't believe that it is not possible to read the code in the new key electronically and then use that info to program it to the car.
Even if I had the code, he said it would cost me $150 to program it to the car.
Can anyone offer me realistic advice on this, please. I love this car and I intend to keep it for at least another ten years.

You need to ascertain what frequency your D2 key works on. The earlier 318mhz (I think??) or the newer 433mhz.
Then buy a key (or 2x) matching that frequency.
There's a code on the chip inside the new key, open it and write down the code (or it will come with the bar code label attached).
Find an AULRO member with a Nanocom near to you who can program the key to your D2.
Pretty easy really.
