    Double Cardan front shaft

Hey all.I posted on the Disco 1 thread but thought here might be more appropriate.I own a Disco 1 but need to change my front single uni shaft for a double cardan shaft due to vibration after a 2.5 inch lift.I had a chap tell me that the Disco 2 front shafts are prone to failure to the point of suddenly dropping and causing severe damage to gearboxes. What are peoples experiences with the front DC joint,do they show definite signs of wear before failing or can they just go suddenly and what are the exact problems you have found with them if any.
    Cheers

    yep,, all of that,,
also the bigger the lift the shorter the life expectancy.

several alternatives to the standard shaft are available.

google or search here for Tom woods shafts.

Thanks Pedro.I also just found another mob that make upgrade kits for the standard shaft and make heavy duty shafts also, they are called Great Basin Rovers and are based in the USA.They also have some useful info on the shaft problems.I still may look at getting a Hilux DC shaft modified to fit as they are very strong and to my knowledge use spicer bits.

    Carden Joint

    Hi
The Boys D1 Tdi 200 has had a 2' Lift for sometime now we had the front and rear propshafts balanced and it has run without problems and dispite an 18year olds enthusiasim for the extreme.
After reading the horror stories about D2 front propshafts I replaced the non greasable UJs and center bearing in my D2. As far as I know the lack of grease nipples and the Air Con drain draining water on the Carden joint continuously was the problem. My D2 is a Td5 Auto with 110k one of the eight bearing caps was dry and very notchy, this was not noticable until it was dismantled. Thanks to this forum again I purchased the centre bearing from Rock Auto in the states and the UJs from MR Autos Qld.
Ques: Was there any other issues with the propshaft?
Has anyone fitted the Auto Casing Guard from LRA?

Nice to hear your sons D1 has been fine with a 2 inch lift.I have spoken to a few guys and it seems a 3inch lift should be fine on a D1 with original front shaft so I am going to take mine off and get it checked for balance and get the uni's thoroughly checked. The problem I have is that the car has been off the road since I bought it and have rebuilt it.I did change the shaft from my old classic onto it before driving it because that was driving well but have just noticed a dent in the shaft so it may be out of balance.I am hoping I can keep the D1 shaft due to some horror stories about D2 shafts breaking but am aware that the heavy duty units seem a lot better but then there is quite an extra cost involved.

I would advise the 1310 ones over the hilux ones because they are stronger. TW and GBR are both 1310 as far as I know. With the socket flange part which houses the centre bearing you can either have strong and not servicable or you can have servicable and not as strong. TW now has his own socket flanges made from steel rather than cast iron that has a service ability and the manufacture makes them strong - this is not a Spicer part.

    I'll take a picture.
