40psi is the pressure of choice of lazy tyre fitters.
When I had the Michelin Latitude Cross 235/70R16's fitted, they were 40psi front and rear. The ride was awful.
I contacted Michelin they recommend running at placard. I run them slightly harder (30/42) because I have a second battery under the bonnet, and a tirfor and tools in the rear storage boxes.
Even with 265/75R16's I'd bet that the front's are overinflated for the loading.
Assuming you are running Cooper SST's around 30psi fronts, 35psi rear assuming bullbar/winch would be close to the design curve. Even at maximum loading on the rear axle you wouldn't need any more than 42psi in the rears.

I was checking out what pressures should be for tyres not listed on the vehicle tyre placard.
One method suggested on this forum was to check the tyre pressures with the vehicle loaded and cold tyres, go for a drive 15mins then check when warm at running temp, ideally an increase of 4psi if higher increase cold pressure if lower drop the cold pressure. It worked well for the D1 and D2.
Well I can tell you that running 34 in the front with 18's WILL wear the centres out well before the rest of the tyre, around 35K and they are stuffed.

04 Td5. Only extra front weight is an Optima D34 and ARB tray. Extra rear weight is a Drifta two drawer and table, recovery gear and tools, platinum drop slide ( heavy) and ARB 47L fridge. 3 Rhino HD bars, 2m Rhino tray and Foxwing up top.
Tyres are 255/70*16 Cooper ST (passenger construction).
Tyre placard says 30fr 38rr
I run 33 and 38. 10% over in front. Tried same in rear but too firm (42). When it's loaded for a trip away with 3 passengers, I might go 33 / 40. Tyre wear is even, temps are low, even after extended highway speeds.
Beach, I'm 12/16. Bush 18/24. Rocky terrain 16/20. Mud, as low as possible to make headway then air up. These reduced pressures are at correspondingly lowered speeds.
Paul, run those numbers through your calculator and tell me how far off the mark I am .... ???

Kev, what is the maximum pressure on those Coopers? The coopers catalog and other posts on the web reckon that size is 35psi max inflation???
