It's not year but "model year" which matters. From what I can tell only MY 02 cars completely omitted the CDL. On cars prior to MY 02 the internals were present but not the in-cab lever. From MY03 onwards the CDL was reinstated with in-cab lever.

What makes this a little confusing is that the Land Rover Model Year usually ran from September to August. This means MY 02 covers cars built from roughly the start of September 2001 through to the end of August 2002.

You can check on the build date of the car if you have the VIN. You need to register for an account on TOPIx - TOPIx to do so, but TOPIx does give you Model Year, Build Date and Warranty Date. Warranty Date is the date the car was sold to the original purchaser, and should tally with the rego renewal date.

    hope this helps
    Paul

Add: TOPIx will also indicate if there are any "outstanding campaigns" - which are recalls and items that were meant to be fixed by the dealer at service time. I'd assumed this was always "no outstanding" until I check a car that is currently on CarSales and found that it had "A148 - ABS Modulator Valve Covers" outstanding.

Do you mean the TD5 oil pump bolt issue, or something different? If it's the oil pump bolt it is easy enough to do a preventative fix, and would take a mechanic an hour or so.

Yes OffTrack the oil pump alignment problem not knowing if the one you buy had the fault or still has the fault or if there may be damage done to the engine that you don't pick up on till you have owned it awhile but i guess if its got around 200k on the clock and not failed it probably won't fail I don't know at what Ks did the problem show up was it early in there life or not to later I have noticed in the carsales a couple of 2004 TD5 that have just had engines replaced and have low Ks

    Thanks Aaron.

The model year start and end dates seem to be reasonably flexible hence the "usual" and "roughly"

The simplest way of determining the Model Year is the VIN. A MY02 car will have VIN with SALLTGMxx2Axxxxxx. It should be only D2's with a "2A" VIN that have no CDL internals fitted, although it would expand the knowledge base if we could find exceptions to that rule.

    Backtabush,

The oil pump bolt will usually destroy the engine, unless the driver picked it up very, very quickly and switched off almost immediately. Even then the motor is likely to suffer bearing damage that would not go unnoticed.

If you search the forum its all TD5 D2's that can potentially suffer this fate and it's recommended that you check the bolt regardless.

Urban Panzer has a good write up of what is involved on his site:

    www.discovery2.co.uk / TD5 "Famous" Oil Pump Bolt

I'd suggest you look for a D2 that is in good condition, have it inspected to make sure it has no major issues. Once you buy a D2 get the oil pump bolt checked.

Thanks OffTrack for the info no I didn't no about that problem with the oil pump bolt but I am glad I know now and I will make it a priority to check it. The one I was originally concerned about was the Technical Alert TA03 1201 witch would not be a instant failure like the bolt but a slow failure as oil pressure could be running low for a long time not knowing these engines what would be a sign of this pending failure maybe noisy bottom end or clattery top end from the point of view of buying a 03 knowing its inside the Vin range and may have this oil pump misalignment error its hard to get it out of your mine when your standing there thinking what if I buy this car and in no time the engine fails and I have to explain this to the missus do you know of anyone that has had this problem with the 03s thanks

The oil pump bolt is a TD5 issue. The Tech Alert you mention applies to 4.6L V8 engine only. Don't think the 4.6 V8 was sold in Australia and there certainly aren't any listed on Carsales, so I think you can rest easy.
