    converting a v8 auto to td5 manual ?

Hi all. I had a little accident the other day , rolled my d2 td5 manual and boat on the back . Pretty scary , we were doing 90-95 and lost controll after avoiding 2 roos.

All 4 inside unharmed thankfully but the car is ruined body wise but the chassis is straight and the motor is fine . No insurance so i am looking to get a cheep v8 auto and swaping the motor and gearbox , or the whole body .

If any of you have done this before i would really like to hear of your expirence and if there is any thing that would stop me from doing this swap . Thanks in advance .Bill

I'm pretty sure that I've seen a body for sale on ebay recently, might be worth a look. Can't advise about the V8 to TD5 swap but it can prbably be done, depends on how much time you've got, alternatively a TD% that's had a motor seize or something lke that might be easier. Triumph Rover Spares might just have what you need.

I too had the unfortuante experience of having my TD5 rolled earlier in the year and considered getting a replacement body and doing a transfer.

We dismissed this because of :-
lack of facility to do the work
unknown exact cost (having just bought our first house)
no other form of transport for Mrs Hay Ewe
cost of body shell ($2000 from triumph in Adelaide)
cost of shipping said body shell

looking back, my honey and I were probably in a slight state of shock and when we came around the market had quite a few 2nd hand disco's availble. in the end we got one locally with a lot less km's on it and the only difference is a fabric interior instead of the leather we had

if you ahve the tooling and facility and time and do a straight swap I think it would work, especailly becuase you have the vehicle to start with and cahning the body shell I am led to beleive is quite easy, there are only 7 bolts

    shall follow with interest

Of course, what you really learnt was...'Roos are vermin...and next time it will be cheaper and safer for all involved, to knock a couple over rather than try to avoid.

Bullbar, steer straight, foot to the floor and drive straight through it.
This was from a 7 foot alpha on a wet muddy road at 80kmh without the bar thats on it now, which ironically was sitting at the ARB dealer in Albany but that's another story.....

Swerving is the biggest mistake you will ever make and will most likely result in more than just a dinged front end.

I don't think the roo would have done much damage even though i didn't have a bull bar fitted . I instantly regreted the decision to swerve . If i had a bull bar i would not have swerved .

I did a body swap on a D2 almost 10 years ago, bought a damaged car at the auctions and another completely stripped body from AMV in Melbourne. The wiring loom is a bit undaunting, but take care and mark everything, especially in the order you remove it. You will have to do a similar thing as the entire wiring loom will be different and have to be swapped, as will fuel lines, .....

    Sounds like fun

Did this conversion project ever get anywhere? I'm considering the same swap only over in the US where we don't have TD5's at all. On the fence about swapping to a 5 speed or just going with another auto...
