CDL locked/ light off? Whats that noise?

Assuming all switches on the transfer case are calibrated and working correctly, and

Assuming the CDL cable is adjusted correctly for proper function, and light warning light bulb is good,

Is it possible to have the CDL locked without the warning light on.

Say if you engaged the CDL (in neutral's engine running ) and when finished Off road driving, disengaged the CDL either, without both in neutral or without the engine running, does the ECU logic allow for the CDL to remain locked without the warning light on?

I have had a couple of instances since fitting my cdl cable of reversing slightly say out of a carpark space and hearing a godawful noise like a sudden release of tension from the gearbox.(Sproingy clunk)

I have raised a front wheel and positively checked the CDL is not locked and all indications are normal now and levers all function as advertised.

so the above question is aimed at the engage/disengage process when either not in neutral or no engine running, what happens if?

    cheers

Because you fitted the cable I assume your TC had the internals but no cable and so is an early D2. The diff lock housing on those models only had 1 switch that is operated by the lever which is spring-loaded, not the selector shaft itself. Hence the light is not conclusive. The D2a had 2 switches - 1 for the lever and 1 for the shaft so that the light was on if either was in the locked position.

    Thanks Graeme,

So on my 2000 Td5 you are saying that, after locking the Ctr Diff, when you go to unlock it, it is possible to move the gear selector lever to unlock the diff, the spigot turns, the dash light goes out but inside the T/case the selector shaft stays in the "diff locked" position and therefore the centre diff stays locked?

    Have I got that right?

When coming out of difflock, you need to reverse a few metres to unwind it.
Having had an RRC for so long, I got used to just switching between hi/lo on the fly and no need for CDL with BW transfer.
First time I did it in the D2, I literally had $$ flashing before my eyes as it went BANG and a total loss of drive! Had to think for a minute or two until I remembered....

Yes. You get used to the feel of still being locked so if it doesn't unlock quite quickly after getting off then on the throttle a couple of times, do Lovemyrangie's trick.

With the D2a's 2 switches, the opposite can occur whereby the light indicates its locked as soon as the lever is moved to lock but it may not yet be locked, but soon locks if the surface is at all slippery.

On my 2000 d2 the dash light reflects the status of the internals. You can disengage the lever but the dash light remains on until the diff internals unlock. If there is any windup I have to reverse to get the internals to unlock and for the dash light to switch off.

Yes I agree with Offrtrack, on the 2000 D2 the light switch is operated by the selector shaft, not the lever, so the difflock light is only on when the diff is locked, and will not go off until the difflock is released, even if the cable knob is pushed in. So light off means unlocked (assuming bulb good, which you said)
My D2 also has a cable operated difflock.

Haven't had a problem since the initial couple of "Bangs", which occured when the diff lock light was off. very strange.

And I followed your logic through the Rave pics of the TC diag's. Thanks, I now see that the light on means selector shaft has moved the selector fork which engages the dog clutch so as you say the light is a indication of the physical position of the shaft/fork/clutch.

    Clear as mudd!

    thanks heaps

    Al,
Possibly the selector shaft is moving initially just enough to turn the switch off, but not enough to disenage the dog clutch, and the noise happens when the clutch finally releases? The selector shaft needs to move about 5 mm to disengage the clutch.
Mine sometimes makes an almighty bang when it releases because I have uneven tyre wear front and back.

    Cheers,
    Terry
