Reporting back on some fixes - throttle body heater and whistle..!!!!!! Yes!

    G'day all,

I have had a leak under the throttle body for some time. Years ago I jumped at shadows because quite a while ago on this forum it was said that replacing the heater unit under the TB butterfly area was the go from a preventative maintenance point of view...mine was pulled out with the gasket intact, and the body clear and not corroded or leaking at 130,000k. I kept it. The replacement one went in and leaked 20,000k later and I noticed at some point she got a vac leak whistle. Could never trace it. I didnt do that work.

Finally got around to stripping off the throttle body again and undid the heater and saw the gasket was shot and it was blocked, partly from the gasket I think and some blue gasket former had squashed into the small gallery. I put my old one on that was still perfect and very sparingly used loctite blue gasket former with the original gasket. Before that I sanded both the gasket and the heater block on a flat surface. I let it try for 38 hours or so and then filled with water and ran it yesterday and 2 things were evident - excellent coolant temps, no water loss AND no vac whistle. I saw on here a little while back someone noted that one of the TB bolts went into the plenum itself. I think its the bottom closest to the firewall but didnt look too hard. The bolts that came out had no thread sealer but I remedied that and Im confident thats where the whistle was coming from. Nice result all round.

    Cheers

..bugger...its leaking again - not as bad, but its there.!!!!! Do I spring for a genuine part (which is not just the gasket but the whole unit) or bypass it (Brisbane weather) or is there an aftermarket one that is better/same but cheaper!

    Cheers

I replaced mine a while ago with a genuine unit, bottom plate & gasket. Cost me about $80 from my sieve like memory. Haven't had any issues since but have read since that it's there to effectively defrost the throttle body in sub zero temps in the climate the car was designed in. I live near Geelong in Vic & very rarely in the 11 years I've been here have the coldest mornings ( I'm a pastry chef/bakery owner, 1-2am starts) & have confidently decided that if the gasket goes again, I'll be bypassing it for sure, unless of course I can get hold of the gasket separate from the plate, id like to think a gasket alone smaller than a playing card isn't gonna be anywhere near $80!
I think you'll be right in Brissy

I'm no expert, but I understand that the throttle heater is useful only in temperatures way, way below zero. There would be few instances (if any) in Australia where the heater would have made a difference.
Charlotte's Pass on its coldest night perhaps.

Bypass the heater and do away with 5 or 6 ridiculous pieces of pipe and tube, and replace with one piece of 5/16" hose. Cost: ~$8

Thanks fellas - I had replaced the rubbish brittle black plastic pipe with good quality rubber hose a few years ago as a precaution, but the more I think of it the more I think the heater is not required up here. Where I live I do get mornings of minus 1-3 at times, and sometimes go to work at the time when thats peaking, so I wondered if that would be a drama. I might try to have one more go at the gasket before giving up on it...

For those who have not seen it this is what the plate kit looks like

Should a tiny bit of gasket form paste be used on both sides or none at all?

    Cheers
