These are the lower ball joints, and when the rubber boots have deteriated that much I would say the joint is due for replacement
Not a home DIY in the easy sense, but doable.

Hi all,
Found myself lying underneath the Disco this morning, as is my wont on a saturday morning, wondering at the marvel of Land Rover engineering and noticed that these rubber boots on each of the front wheels had deteriorated, as per picture below
Crappy picture, I know, but they're at the bottom of the wheel. I believe these have something to do with the steering system?
Can anyone give me a name for these little rubber boots? Are they easy enough to replace, or is this a job for someone who knows something about steering components? I'm generally happy swinging a spanner around for services and whatnot.

Thanks Justin. Looks like a trip to the mechanic then. Bugger.
So, mechanic says the ball joints are fine at the moment, no play. Is it possible to replace the boots without replacing the ball joint, or to seal it back up with sickaflex or something. Sounds good to me, and cheap. Thoughts anyone?
Usually the boots go before these ball joints wear, you can buy a cheap set of ball joints and scab the boots off them and fit them to the exiting ball joints. I know of some one to do this for a RWC, replacing ball joints are a mongrel to replace unless you can make up a jig that presses them out.
I have been told that getting them out is not that hard, but getting the new ones in is difficult.
Some one on here might have a DYI experience
Used to be able to just buy the boots - ask at a repco store, or get a blank look from one of the other chains....
I've never done a set of ball joints before. Can you replace the boots without taking the ball joint out then?
I bought a set of these:
