    Coolant loss D2, Help required

    Coolant loss, Help required.

    D2, V8, Auto

I have recently had a ZF gearbox replaced (low km from a right off), it does everything right up, down and everything it should.

However after driving, short distances there is a coolant loss (quite a lot) seemingly somewhere from the front of the motor, there are no leaking hoses or residue to trace back to the source.
It will idle all day without any coolant loss, the cooling system is therefore seemingly secure.

The garage who installed the gearbox cannot offer any explanation.

Hopefully some Rover expert may have a simple explanation/repair any help with this matter would be appreciated?

    Regards,
    GJP

So where are you seeing the coolant? Just in general around the front of the motor?

Is the water pump definitely in good condition? If the bearings are dodgy is it possible the shaft is moving around a bit under load/RPM and causing a leak thats not there at idle?

the waterpump on my 95 P38 V8 leaked more and more the higher the revs went.

    Thanks Steve,

It seems to be coming from that area, I hadn't thought of a load, which makes sense. the pump is the original (10 yrs), it is most certainly not coming from any of the hoses.

Had a similar problem with a 92 Range Rover I once had, was using a load of coolant, but could never find the leak, only did it when the engine got hot, so in short running it never happened.

Turned out to be a pinprick hole in one of the radiator hoses that only leaked when under high pressure, engine warm, motorway cruising etc, $20 buck hose and all sorted...could be the same?

Had this problem on mine a few weeks ago,, some days I would lose nothing, others I would lose heaps, but it left no signs of where it was from. No water anywhere to be seen. Wasn't untill we put some of that bright green coolant in it that we could spot where it was coming from. Bought a new pump and replaced it. The old one had worn bearings, the water was coming out the little hole at the bottom, and because it was hot, would just evaporate away. Was told by a couple of people that it was the head gasket,, at up to $3,000 to fix that, I was glad to pay under $300 for a water pump and replace it myself,, easy job,,
    All good now

    so its a lot?
    and from the front?

    but no residue??

oat coolant leaves a very distinctive orange trail.

    still no trail?
    maybe out the exhaust?

Agreed, HG possibly, is there any steam coming from the exhaust? If not, when mine let go with the slipped liner it was pressurizing the cooling system forcing the water out the overflow tube on the header tank, spitting it straight onto the exhaust manifold & instantly evaporating & left minimal residue because the exhaust is so hot. This would be consistent with it only losing coolant when it's hot & the cooling system is pressurized.

    Thanks guy's everyones input appreciated!

OAT colour snail trail, yes coming down from the motor front (can't see from where) and along the sump (almost dead centre) and then pooling underneath on the road surface (when stopped)
The position of the trail leads it to the water pump vicinity, although you can't exactly see.
There are no other snail trails from coolant connections and the tanks on the radiator are also OK

    Cheers, GJP

I have the same problems as you , after I degreased and cleaned the engine a couple days later I found seepage coming from the head gasket at the front lower part of head where it joins the block, only a little bit, but when running the engine a bit more started to leak it ran down and pooled on the bottom of the sump. Took me ages to locate the source. Some had green coolant in there before, I flushed and used OAT, but Oat will find any dodgey spot and leak from it.

The out parts of the head/block has the water galleries, so Either a gasket fail or slight warpage of the heads.
My coolant level only drops 1/2 a cup ful over 2 weeks. I am doing the heads in the next 2 weeks.
