    Recent 4WD articles about Discos

    Guys,

What do you reckon about the recent articles about Discos (Overlander and now 4WD Action)? Some of the information is right, so of it is worth a laugh!!!

It's worth noting that both of the magazines that you have mentioned are owned by the same company (EMG), have the same publishers etc so probably both source their information ??? from the same sources.

Don't know much about Overlander, but the other mag that you have mentioned have not been well known for "accuracy" of information published, particularly when it comes to Landrovers.

I probably haven't read the articles you're referring to, so don't know if they're good or bad - but I have always found so far that if you really want to know anything about Landrovers, there's nowhere better than this site to find honest and knowledgeable answers to your questions.
    Cheers .........

Those mags are for entertainment purposes only. There is very little serious investigative writing, mostly it is just the first thing that comes into their little heads or not infrequently copied from the first thing that came into someone else's head. Bit like this really! I remember years after the D2 was launched you would still read the D2 has a 4 cylinder engine. They still bang on about poor build quality. I think that term was coined for the series LRs but did not have any meaning to the owner of a D2.

I picked up a year's worth of that second magazine for $5 at a local market a little while back, and after reading them I figured I probably got about the right value for money. One of the articles was supposedly a basic electrical article, I think about dizzies or alternators, but the poor writer had no idea about the meaning of the words voltage, current, etc. I almost used it in an exam at school for my Physics students - asking them to point out the errors in the articles and rewrite it to make sense.

If it helps, information on Nissans wasn't much better, and they're a little more represented in the local market than the Discos.

    About Right

Didn't want to bias the answers with my view up front - you guys are right. BTW - I wasn't suggesting that the stuff that they printed about Discos was accurate. Some of the nonsense that they print in general and the amount of errors, both in basic mechanics and the advice / bias.

My experience of one of the 2 mags mentioned- I have read heaps of 4wd actions- they recycle the same stuff over and over. Funny how LR's seem to be regarded poorly in build and reliability- yet to see them mention one of the numerous toyota recalls of recent times or the inherent faults of some toyota vehicles. Gives me the ****s.

    Toyo recalls

I remember seeing in one article over two columns of Toyo recalls, with the conclusion at the end that the Toyo was a good, reliable car. Around the same time, 2/3 of a column on LR recalls, with the conclusion that the amount of recalls reflects the poor build quality. Because of all of its foibles, a LR is a lot better than driving a fridge (ie something with no personality).
