Has anyone had any experience with the Tigerz11 brand roof racks? The have an alloy one that I've seen advertise for under $700 that looks pretty good.
I have spoken to the distributor and he couldn't tell me if they would fit on a Disco 2. He told me that some of the Discovery owners that have bought them have sent them back while others haven't. I also dont think there are any available at the moment either.
The main purpose i want a rack is for carting around camping equipment and a canoe (35kg) etc, about 80kg all up.
Should I be concerned about how much the rack weighs? If I put a steel one on (50kg +/-) will it limit how much I can actually carry on it safely because the gutters can only handle a certain amount (not sure how much)? I like the idea of an alloy one, as minimising the weight up high is preferable.
I would also really not like to spend more than $1000 is possible.
The only issue I can see with them, would be the lengths of the legs that clamp into the rain gutters.
The disco has a high roof, and as such, the standard length legs that fit a Cruiser or Pajero probably wont be long enough.
Now, this shouldn't be a deal breaker, as they could supply longer legs to suit the disco. But, will they????
The rack itself looks good. As for the weight, any roof-rack is going to need to be included in the total amount of weight you put up there. I cant remember off hand what that figure is, but it should be in the owners manual.
According to their website they appear to have high brackets for troopies and discos, I may have to try and find out some more specific dimensions though in order to determine whether they will clear the roof rails or not.
Unfortunately I can only find the max loads for the roof rails not the gutters in the owners manual. I've searched these forums and the internet and nowhere seems to state it.
I used to have a steel roof rack on my D1 and used it many times as a viewing platform (I'm not a skinny bloke either). I would not want to carry too much weight up there though due to it altering the centre of gravity.
Just search for discovery roof rack in ebay and teh one's Tombie is referring to will come up - I've seen them for $200 plus post. They're pretty tempting, anyone else got one?
I've had a look at those racks you were suggesting and they look good. Do you thing the front and back walls would cope with a 35kg canoe strapped upside down on it?
It might be an option if they could provide some longer brackets. I like that it's lite as well.
Tombie, I have considered the racks with a basket down the side, but the canoe is 95cm at its widest and I generally transport it upside down. On 150cm bars that doesn't leave much room for bulky items or a narrow rack. Not that I'm discounting it, just making sure there isn't another way.
My preference at the moment would be a roof cage because I could chuck a lot of bulky stuff in it and them throw the canoe on top.
Just put one of those cheap ally racks of ebay on the disco and doesn`t look too bad.
I can`t tell the difference from a rhino, even takes genuine rhino accesories like jack & shovel holders.
Sits up pretty high and has a little bit of wobble from the tall mounts.
