    Growling!! HELP PLEASE

    Hi

My 2000 V8 auto ( FSH and at 162,000ks) has always had a slight growling noise - seemingly emanating from the rear of the engine/gearbox area. I thought at one stage it might be the front drive shaft universal, but it is there when stopped and engine running.

In the last coupe of days it seems to have gotten louder. Seems to be there when stationary and noticeable at low speeds. Seems to lessen at speed, but that could be because of the increased general noise.

What could this be, if NOT the front drive shaft universal??

Gear box issue?? Rear of engine issues?? Seems to run smooth as by all accounts...... but????

    Any wisdom would be valued

    Regards

    Ray

    growling noise

May not be from the rear of the engine, may be from the power steering, growls are fairly common from that area.I`ve had growls on and off for years but never any issues for thousands of Ks.

    Damn!!

    Hi, All

Still there, seems at the rear of the engine/gearbox and consistent with the engine’s revs. More of a whine than a growl. Gearbox functions as it should, and the engine seems smooth as.

As Billy T James would say, I'm Pukka Te Whaino!!!

Any wisdom or options to look at would be appreciated.

Thanks re the exhaust - but has recently had new cat converters and does not at all sound like exhaust.

Engine fits tight under revs and so not seem like engine mounts. However, how would that cause?? Keen to hear of any experiences - or other possible options.

    Regards

Is the noise constant or every 21 seconds? My ACE bleeds pressure every 21sec with about a half second growling sound. The sound is hard to pin down as it's from the block under the drivers footwell.

Note timing results may vary by individual discovery.

Thanks heaps - well other comment I have had is that it sounds like the ACE. But not a few seconds at a time - like, it's a whine over time.

Just annoying, as the gearbox and engine itself seem sweet as a nut! But the whine is such a nuisace, that I can't really enjoy the throbbing sound of the fabulous V8!!

I recall in the Series 1's that I have had, I used to have the windows down just to hear the exhaust note!! But this Series II .... the noise is the bloody whine!!

    Regards

The more constant whine I had was power steering pump that disappeared after replacement and made ACE more evident.
