Td5 Disco auto 2000 sls ace 260K Last week heard squeeking from under front of vehicle, it was much more rapid than the road wheel revs: you guessed it - worn double-cardan bearing! Removed shaft and fitted new GKN unis with grease nipples. The front bearing of the DC joint literally fell apart during dissasembly! This is the uni that sits directly under the air-con condensation drip. The moral of the story is don't delay if / when you hear the dreaded front propshaft squeek.

RIP Bucko - Riding on Forever
Just had the same problem although I've also had the hassle of dealing with crap mechanics who tell me I need to buy a new shaft as my housing is likely stuffed (they tell me this without having looked at it). One mechanic even had the shaft in his shop for a day and still told me it needed a new housing.
How can anyone say this without taking the uni's out?
Moral of the story. Mechanics are dicks
And for those interested, my housing is fine.
Heavy duty uni's from Hardy spicer have been ordered and I'm doing the work myself
If its any help I recently purchased a front prop-shaft repair kit for my D2 from JGS 4x4 Land Rover parts in UK for 65.99 GBP with 26 GBP delivery. In total 91.99 GBP or $141.64 at todays rate.

Might be worth having a set on hand, just in case.

If you know what you're doing and the unit is worn enough, Quite easily.
and you're the kind of know it all Belgium that makes the mechanics life unsufferable to the point that we just give you a line to naff you off so we can get on with working with people who give a damn.

So when I drop off a tailshaft saying, the uni's are ****** can you please replace. You feed me some bull**** line about the rest of the housing being broken and I need a new shaft for 1300?
When the housing is clearly not worn when inspected with the unis still in?
That seems like dodgy mechanic to me?
Fair enough if it was broken and you had inspected it.
It's not the sliding joint that is worn. The unis clearly need replacing...
so you know about the center bearing and how if you havent serviced it properly as part of your regular maintenance that it will have chewed out the center pin or the housing side that it sits in? you know the bearing whose purpose it is to synchronize the movement of the 2 UJs that make up the DC side of the shaft?
Its immediately apparent that you're probably the kind of understanding guy who wouldn't dream of holding the mechanic who rebuilt the shaft, even though it was unrepairable, under your implicit instrucitons that the shaft is ok responsible for its failure that took out the cross memeber, side of the chassis, the auto, cracked the tcase output bearing housing lunching your Tcase and then had the remnants of the front half of the shaft rip a hole in the sump.
just out of curiosity, do you know what the serviceable limits of the slip joint are and what other damage renders the shaft in a condition that warrents replacement?
Did you plan on replacing the nuts and washers that mount the shaft as well?
