    EGR Removal

Merry Xmas everyone. Got bored today sitting around so thought would tackle the EGR removal on my 2003 TD5. Managed to get the bolts out of the manifold, all going well. Then i noticed that my removal kit,,purchased on E-bay uk only had 1 blanking plate. I know i need one for the exhaust manifold but on searching google have seen i need two more for the heat exchanger to be left in place. Is this correct or can the one blanking plate i have be used on the left hand side of the heat exchanger leaving the rest in place or do i need another 2 blanking plates.
    Thanks guys

    Mike

    1 Blanking Plate

I only got one and put it on the lhs of the heat exchange - no issues in the year that I have had it like this. I too had concerns, but the car has done over 20,000k like this.

    Thanks bsperka

Yes i just wondered if the heat exchanger needed to be isolated from the manifold. I guess not. I will give it a go tomorrow and if there is a problem later on i can always get 2 more blanking plates.

    Completed

Just completed the removal and refit. Took about 1 hour. The car runs sweet and seems to be as good as it was before, which is good.
I only fitted the one plate but would like to purchase two more if thats ok with you Tombie. E-mail me the amount including p+p to Dunsborough WA 6281.

I have the EU3 motor with the heat exchanger but just put one plate on the exhaust manifold and took out the connecting pieces. The heat exchanger is just open now, why would it need to have plates on it as well?

Not sure if it should be blanked off completely or not. I was a little concerned that the pipe from the expansion tank to the heat excanager might have water in it. I dont know as im a builder LOL. Thought if i can get two more plates it wouold be sorted. Im not sure if it was my imagination but on a test drive it appeared the car reved longer before changing gear. Might be my imagination.

I just blanked off the side of the EGR cooler closest to where the EGER used to be ... 1 x plate used. I left the cooler, the water lines, and it's connecting pipe to the exh' manifold intact. I just blocked and sealed the end of the 2x vacum lines that went to the EGR valve, and tucked them up under the engine cowling ... left the solenoid valves intact. I get no faults on the nanocom, and the EGR could be re-installed (if required).

That was 2.5yrs ago ... no issues.

    EGR Removal

I went 1 further on my 2004 EU strangled engine and removed the complete EGR including heat exchanger, solenoids, hoses etc and it has cleaned up the engine bay.

Only used 1 blanking plate on the exhaust manifold that I drilled and now has an EGT pyro fitted.

Kept it all in a box in case I got pinged by a transport inspector but over the past 2 interstate relocations requiring rego transfers and the car to go over the pits - it's never been mentioned or picked up so I'm not concerned any further.

Both my D2's engine performance and 'driveability' have benefited enormously by junking the EGR gear
