Fuel gauge wont go over a half
I have recently joined the ranks of Land Rover owners and have purchased a 2000 auto v8. I am taking it to Fraser island in a couple of days and don't really want to buy fuel on the island. My problem as I have discovered is that fuel gauge only goes to just over a half and drops normally from there with the light coming on after around 350km of hwy driving. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue. It seems like it is out of calibration somehow. I don't really want to be driving it around for 300km with the fuel light on but I was wondering what sort of range I could expect on the highway and more importantly how far I could expect from a tank if doing only beach driving. I was guesstimating 400km. I was thinking of pulling the fuel pump out for a look but I don't want to break anything in the 2 days before I go but if there is a simple cure I may try it....thanks

I'd check the electrical connection into the fuel pump is clean and working properly..... and if it is then next I'd check the sender which is on the side of the pump.
Cheers

My sender was playing silly buggers too. Take out the pump and give the potentiometer on the pump a light going over with fine emery or acetone. Should work well after that.

Will try that one when I get back. Unfortunately I have left my run a bit late now so will have to go by the trip meter and a guesstimate of 15l/100km on the highway and 25l/100km on the island with fingers crossed and fuel light on. I am not a lead foot so I think these figures should be fairly conservative.

I'd be keeping a full jerry can handy as insurance

With the V8 you will need to fill her up again on Fraser, depending on the conditions and how you drive it will suck the petrol...
And as Titch says take a jerry can for insurance...

Hi, sending this from Fraser. The disco used 14l/100km on the way up and so far I have done 200km on the island with no fuel light. Mind you I have not been over 2000rpm as the v8 doesnt need the revs. The amigos have been playing up here and there on the island but hopefully a decent pressure wash might fix that. Car has been great and I love the inland tracks. Great fun and good camaraderie and lots of land rovers to look at. Will try the emery paper when I get back.
