Buying a D2, what to look for?

    Hey guys,

I have done a bit of reading, but i'm basically after opinions from owners of these things.

I currently have a VE Commodore that well... won't get me up Fraser or Moreton. I have 2 kids, with another one planned for next year and a wife. We're looking at getting into a bit of touring/camping around QLD. (Fraser, Moreton, DI, some parks).

I'm a small motor mechanic, so doing some stuff repairs wise won't be hard... I've previously owned a Toyota Surf, so I know all about spending weekends in the garage under a bonnet, or under the truck. I spent 4 years with diesel oil under the fingernails.

What I'd love some advice on is, am I going to be buying into another Surf where it becomes a money pit thats going to have me on/off the road? I bought the VE to replace a ED Falcon for that exact reason, I don't want to take a massive step backwards nor have to use the other halfs camry every second weekend cos the Dicso is off the road.

I'd been looking at Patrols (GQ or GU) but they're a. Big, b. Petrols are all high kayers, c. About as luxurious as a golf buggy with 2 diffs. Same as Prado's and Cruisers... petrols are all high kayers and in pretty poor shape. I've found a 99 Disco 2 ES spec that has new tyres, a service history and been owned by a landy mechanic for most of its life. My theory is something like that should be pretty reliable. Its a 4.0L V8 Petrol with all the goodies.

Can anyone offer me some advice on what I should be checking out? I'm aware of stuff like airbags, coolant condition, radiator stuff, and auto's not shifting nicely. Anything else would be helpful.

The ES Discovery 2 wether petrol or diesel is a pleasant 4WD to drive, both have issues that can be sorted by someone handy with engines like yourself. I now have a diesel version and the difference in fuel consumption is huge.
Have no illusions the petrol consumption with a V8 disco will be 18L/100km minimum to over 30L/100km ++ giving in a hard time.
My previous XA GT spec falcon used less fuel...

Hmmm I thought the fuel consumption would be bad but that bad?

The Commodore gets driven hardish, and is using up to about 14l/100km but then I only drive 9km each way to work so its not a major concern.

People have varying experiences with Fuel on this website.

I have D2 (V8-2003) and city travel is generally high 17 to 18 litres per 100 km.

Highway is around 14 - 15/100 (pretty sure). To achieve 30/100 km pretty sure you are doing some hard towing and drinking at the bowser. One for the car, one for me. I would be filling my pants if I was chewing up 30 litres (something wrong with the rig).

I own the V8 version also in the D2, yeah I'm keeping the BP servo in business & if I hear the joke " The only thing a Landy V8 can't pass in the freeway is the servo" I'm gonna bust!......but......Get past the idea of the right lane at a set of lights & come to terms with the fact that no matter how far you put ur right foot down these things aren't going anywhere in a hurry she's not too bad. I like to think if her as a cruiser, as in Mustang, not the toyo type, take it easy, "cruise" along & it's not that bad

    its fairly simple,,

    4L
    aerodynamics of a brick

your rollerdore has more HP, only half the weight and is fairly sleek by comparison.

but then,, I dont know anyone that bought a V8 Land Rover for its economy

    no, wait!
    I did.

Hahaha yeah... economy is least of my worries.

Are these things hard to work on yourself, or am I going to be making really good friends with a Landy specialist mechanic?

Hand me a mower/chainsaw/brushcutter and i'll make it go, but these things are a whole new ball game. Electronics i'm all good with though being a car audio nut...

Pretty easy to work on. Get a copy of Mircocat, RAVE and use this forum - priceless. Microcat has the part and numbers which the dealer uses (Although I think they use something else now, if they ever did). Rave is the workshop manual.

Have a look through this website and there should be enough links to get a free copy downloaded from some website (or google it) or you can also buy a copy through this website.

In all fairness, unless you have deep pockets you need to be able to work on them yourself and be willing to buy parts from everywhere around the world, (mainly OZ and the UK).

As Basil135 says, 'Landrover - making mechanics out of drivers since 1948'. Very true.

    Hi Mowerman,

I too have a '99 ES V8 D2 with 228,000 klm. It is excellent, the first LR I have owned and 4+ yrs later still love it.

typical fuel consump has been 18-20l/100 klm or 16-18l on highway

In the 4 yrs half the spending was to replace Head Gaskets, door locks, radiator, MAF, airbags, engine mounts, SLS compressor and subsequently removed SLS and went coils all round. (Plenty of opinion either way on that )

The rest of the spending went on mods, 2" lift, roof rack, CDL reinstated, grease-able front prop, AT tyres.

Service history is critical, but does not guarantee trouble free motoring.

On the whole, I have spent in maintenance less on this vehicle than many of my earlier less travelled vehicles.
