Sounds like the diff has gone 'pop'. It could just be a axle though but I think they're stronger than the diff in the D2.
How does the back of the diff housing look? No holes or signs of bits trying to escape?
hi all
went on a trip to the shakespere hill ( near stanly on the nw coast of tassie)
i was doing the last of the hill climb to the top, when there was a bang like if i hit a rock, there was no drive, but could get the front to spin but only with the hand brake on. Roll down to flatish ground to have a look, could spin the tail shaft with fingers,
it at the mechanic now what do u think i m in for?
i ll try and put a trip report in as soon as i get my camara out of my bus

50/50 it's actually an axle you have snapped. Only a medium cost event even if the diff is U/S.
Probably a diff. If the axle housing is damaged you'll need a whole rear axle otherwise just a diff centre.
A diff centre will cost you about $200 s/h or $1000 brand new. A rear axle assembly will cost you about $500 s/h.
Hope you can do it yourself otherwise add few hours of labour.
The diff looks fine from outside. Should I think about putting a air locker in? Or just put the standed back in that's if it's the diff
Hi Tassie_disco
Pull the axles and have a look, if an axle is broken, well that's that.
If they are ok then there are a few diffs about the place that would suit your disco, PM me if you need help with finding one of these.
Regarding the locking centres, have a yarn with JC ( Justin Cooper ), our JC is the man.
When you are finally rich and famous, also consider a set of heavy duty waisted axles, again our JC is the man.
Is your Disco a D2 the one without the centre diff lock controls, these controls can be retro fitted, repeating myself here but, again our JC is the man.

If you didn't know you had drive to the front until you put your handbrake on you must have been driving without the centre difflock engaged, no wonder you broke a rear axle or diff !!
If its a D2 then maybe it doesn't have a CDL.....
In my experience, hill climbs without CDL engaged just results in more likelyhood of front wheels losing traction (mainly due to lack of weight). I'm not sure how you come to the conclusion its likely to break rear diffs/axles.
Happy to be enlightened though
Steve
