Slight whine uphill in Low Range

As the thread title suggests. I went up to Craig's Hut on Stirling on Friday and noticed on the uphill sections a slight intermittent metallic whine when in low range. It didn't seem to have any correlation to the steering, and seemed most prevalent (but intermittent) on steeper bits.

As for loudness it would be "just noticeable" and nothing to do with the front seat passenger who enjoyed the outing.

It was evident both with CDL engaged and not engaged. No such whine on descent though. It was a softer version but of similar pitch to the whine that my old HJ60 made on the bitumen when the front hubs were still (jammed) in....

    Is this normal?

    Hello stallie,

By chanceI was talking to a mechanic the other day, coincidence, but the conversation included the subject you talk about.
Don't hold me to this but could it be the shims on the transfer case?? Apparently it will get progressively louder if that is the problem.
Anybody feel free to shoot me down if I am absolutely out of the ball park on this.

    Cheers,

    Jason

    yep they'll do that.

if adding a stabaliser, thickening or skinning agent to the Tcase oil quiets the Tcase its a wear issue.

Blknight, can you recommend a stabilizing or thickening agent for the TC? I have a whine also, have changed diff, TC oil & my front prop is only about 6 months old. Would like to try what you've suggested to narrow the whine down to the TC possibly & do you know of any negative long term affects of using the thickening/stabilizing agent?
    Cheers

My whine has been there for probably two years now, not gotten any better or worse.

I had a similar problem when my D2a was about 2 years old with about 40k km. Apparently was a problem with the gearbox which I had fixed under warranty.

I have also replaced the copper sungear shims in the transfer case. My mechanic indicated it should be done about every 100k, depending on how much travelling you do without the cdl engaged. If you leave it too long it creates a major wear problem.

if youve got a standard 80/90wt oil in the Tcase then Moreys Heavy duty Stabiliser is the first cab off the rank, not because its the best (and for everything downstream of the main gearbox it pretty much is anyway) but because its available nearly everywhere.

Manual Gearbox and Diff Treatment- Nulon Australia

Is my prefered treatment if its available,

If you're running engine oil or ATF in the Tcase then its time to up the grade start at a 20/50 weight then a 70weight light gear oil (if you can get it) then and 80/90 if you're really desperate add a tube of the oneshot CV grease or mix it about 50/50 80/90 and 85/140.

the long term effects are primarily the increased wear your going to find when you do get round to repairing it.

I guess I was hopeing more so to narrow down the cause of the whine, if I put the stabilizer in & it makes a difference I can hopefully safely assume its the TC & not something else. I am currently running the gear oil in both diffs & TC & when I changed them a few months back there were no nasties drop out or attached to drain plugs so..... Processes of elimination I guess. Thanks for the info matey😊
