Hi guys,
Can anyone tell me how hard it is to replace the starter motor? I've got it booked in and the mechanic has a re-manufactured one for me ready to go, but how hard would it be to do it myself?
I do have RAVE and can follow instructions but am no Deisel mechanic.

Well on a V8 it's on the drivers side and it can be done without removing the tailshaft but it's easier without. Don't know about diesel though.

I removed my TD5 one about a 18 months ago. It is a pain but not difficult if you have a reasonable tool collection. You need to wriggle under the body to undo some bolts, I accomplished this without ramps or jacking but it would be easier over a pit.
From memory I bloodied two knukles and a finger joint - quiet character building in hindsight
I bought the rebuild kit from the UK for about $25 - stripped and rebuilt the worn parts which was relatively easy then popped the starter back in, has been starting happily ever after

Pritty easy, obviously neg battery terminal first. Then slide under ya disco on the drivers side. remove main cable to starter 13mm from memory. Remove smaller wire from solinoid it is a spade like terminal.
There are three points were the starter is mounted one at the top which is a 15mm nut then one on the side and botton which is 13mm bolts. i find if you remove the 15mm nut first it makes life a lil easier. it can be a pain to undo the 15mm i find a 3/8 drive ratchet work good with an extension and single hex socket. you might have to play a bit to get it to fit between the engine mount and rear of starter
once you have removed the 15mm nut undo the 8mm bolt in the bracket held by the two 13mm bolts that hold the auto cooler pipes on.
remove the 13mm bolts and starter moter will come out from the bottom.

As others have said...pretty easy, but fiddly although well within the realms of a DIY home mechanic...

I got the replacement parts from my local 'Ashdown Ingrams' for around $30.
Part numbers are:
Contact Set part # SLX75827 (same, but pack says "Rodeo")
Plunger part # SLX75564 (exact replacement part)

if u can hear just a "tac!" noise it is right, it is the contacts.
U don't need to buy the replacement kit if u can find a 3mm copper plate, then u remove teh starter engine, take off the contacts and cut the plate with the same shape of the original contacts; I did twice, and it cost me 7$.
