Hello, I have a 2003 TD 5 auto, 215k, that has developed a lack of power down low and a liking to blow black smoke at take off.
I have had the head replaced to fix the sump filling with diesel, problem was present before new head, all sensors are functioning correctly as observed on friends ROVACOM LITE. MAF working, turbo spooling up well to 226kpa and not throwing any codes.
What I'm looking for is where I can buy a second hand ECU at a reasonable price or if anyone in the Warragul to Traralgon area has a spare ECU I can try to see if that is the problem.
The ECU was chipped by Les Richmond Automotive before I bought the car and it use to go great. I believe TRS in Adelaide do this for LRA. I'm just looking at wheather it's the ECU and would rather try a fully functioning one before I spend $450 on a retune!!
If anyone has any other ideas I'm all ears!
Thanks.
Can no one help?
Short of "black smoke under load" equalling "overfuelling / under-airing" .... I'd say look at the turbo, MAF, wastegate modulator, inlet sensor on inlet manifold. I'd look for a "lack of air" rather than an overfuell to start with ... ECU's don't usually turn up the fuel at random ... so a lack of air is a reasonable place to start. Turbo hoses OK ? Are they silicone or original LR rubber ones ?

Ok a follow up, I had Andrew at Hiline 4wd swap out my ECU with a stock one with no change. So I trawled the AULRO forums and a few things pointed to intercooler and hoses so I fitted new silicon hoses and flushed the cooler.... again with no change.
Then as luck would have it(??!!) the transmission died.
So I was back to the forums.
I found AB automatics in Dandy who "remanufacture" trannies so I had Hiline 4wd fit a new tranny and it's like a new car, no more black smoke, no more guttlessness of the bottom..... and the first tank of fuel I got 700kms, the best I ever got was 550kms.
That's about 14.5lt/100 down to 11.8lt/100, what I always hoped to get but never have.
So I would like to recommend AB automatics Home and Hiline 4wd http://www.hiline4wd.com.au/
Hope this helps someone out there.
