    axle removal

G'day guys & gals, was wondering if anyone had any pointers on how to remove the front left axle, hub, cv assembly?
I'm sure there's something not quite right in there as when i put a decent load on the drive line when i park my car in the vacant block over the road, there's a reasonable incline i've gotta go up & if i push too hard it sounds like the teeth on the wheel end of the axle aren't connecting as they should & i get what can only be described as a "grinding" from the front left wheel like the teeth aren't engaged properly. I've lined up a replacement axle, cv & hub assembly from a fellow forum member (bundalene but i wanna have a gander in there before i attempt the whole job & lose a day to lack of knowledge.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mat

I hadn't thought of that, I don't get off road in her much, much to my disgust, but if it were traction control, when it's active doesn't the TC light flash on & off on the dash?

Nah, bulb definitely works, had the amigos issue a while back & it's there on start up. Might just monitor it for a bit & see what happens, passenger side footwell is definitely where it can be felt more so than anywhere else I guess.
    Cheers guys

Sounds like normal TC to me. Brief TC operation will not activate the TC lights, but the pump will run and you can hear the brakes being applied.

If it was a CV joint on the way out you normally hear clicking sounds when on full lock and driving.

If the splines were shot then you would not have any drive at all, so this is not the case. (Unless you had the centre diff locked...)

Pulling the front axle is a 5 minute job, 30 minutes if your scratching your head and hunting for tools.

    • Remove wheel
    • Remove brake calipers, suspend by wire or string to support the brake hose
    • Remove brake rotor, may need an impact screw driver to undo the retaining screw if a ham fisted mechanic has been there before you...
    • Free up some slack in the ABS line, you can unplug the lead in the engine bay if desired.
    • Undo the four bolts holding the hub in place.
    • Carefully extract the hub and feed the ABS lead though until you can unplug the ABS sensor from the top of the hub. Or alternatively, leave the ABS sensor plugged in at the hub and disconnect the other end in the engine bay and feed the entire lead through.

This will give you a hub, CV joint and axle as one unit which is good if you just want to check the CV joint or half shaft. If you want to replace the hub then remember to undo the big nut on the axle before you remove it as it is easier that trying to hold it in a vise.

I'm about to do this to replace front LH axle seal. Procedure is pretty easy - remove wheel, brake caliper, disc, abs from hub. Will need very large Phillips head for disc (1 screw), and hex key for abs sensor. Whole hub with half shaft (axle) can be removed by 4 bolts securing hub to steering knuckle.
