Using (sturdy) brush bar connector as recovery point - advice appreciated

    Hi all,

Firstly, I know there have been previous discussions around not using various tow/tie-down points for recovery. I have read Philco's thread on the recovery points he has on offer, and would go with those if I didn't have questions about my set-up.

My brush bar connection seems to be rather sturdy-looking, so I thought I would canvass (hopefully educated) opinions on my available options.

As can be seen in the attached pics (sorry, I had to take them at night), the brush bar attachment forms a sort of yolk around the chassis, with a loop protruding forward (I've outlined the adaptor with red, while the bolts are highlighted with yellow). This 'yolk' is held onto the chassis with two bolts, much like the vertical recovery point produced by Philco. The brush bar itself attaches to the loop with two bolts.

So, I was wondering, does this yolk-type connection lend itself to recoveries, given its sturdy look and the fact that it wraps around the chassis? Could I get away with just using high-tensile bolts?

If so, would it work with the brush bar attached, in which case the loop on the brush bar could be be used to attach the recovery strap/winch rope?

I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest option, but thought I would check as I'm not sure Philco's recovery points would fit alongside the yolk-like connection.

    Thanks in advance!

This is personal opinion rather than engineering fact... but no way I would risk snatching off it.

It's designed to hold the brush bar to the vehicle - not take the pulling force a snatch strap can apply.

I'm not saying it would not work... but having seen in real life the damage that can be caused by a failed recovery point, I would not be willing to risk it if I was involved in your recovery.

As a point to potentially connect a winch to .... I would look at if far more favourably.

Lets see what those with stronger technical credentials than me say....

Mate, why take the chance... Get a proper plate to match the bolt holes..open out the brush bar and stick in some high tensile bolts...

    Cheers James.

The option I'm looking at now is how I might fit one of Philco's recovery points/plates alongside my brush bar connector.

Problem is my wombat bar is mounted on the outside of the chassis and brush bar connector. meaning I'd need to cut more colour-coded bumper and pad out the wombat bar groove to fit Philco's plates on the outside. Inside the brush bar connector I don't think there's enough space for Philco's RP02 plate (due to the wombat bar height), and I don't seem to have access to the third, rear-most bolt hole for Philco's RP04 plate.

Don't get too excited about Philco's recovery points.

Last time he posted about guards and recovery points was in April 2011 when he said he was putting sales on hold due to an overseas trip.

He's posted once since then, in September 2011, and it appears from the comments he was/is in New Zealand. He hasn't logged into the forum since early January.

Okay no worries... I could trace a recovery plate and send it to you so that you could get some plate and make a couple up... At the same time just get some steel bar and replace the fitted bar by welding it between the 2 new recovery plates.... Easier than trying to fill in or Adapt the shaped wombat groove.... My photos I posted don't seem to work?!... So I can send the pic again via return mms if u wish. 0427 445 677 james

Thanks for the info and offer!

Sadly, I have neither the ability nor the gear to weld anything. I might just scale Philco's photos up to size and cut them out in cardboard to see what fits... should probably have done that in the first place

I do like the idea of having a bar between the recovery plates though, as it means you can use a sling connected to both plates when recovering (to share load) without worrying about them being pulled inwards towards the centre of the sling.

looks more like a tow only point, not a rated snatch point
