Removal of EGR, disco td5 2002 (type 2/EGR cooler)

    Hi again all,

Upon reasearching my issues with my coolant and everything else that can go wrong with a D2 I came across EGR removal and it seems like there have been some significant improvements by removing it. The write up here www.discovery2.co.uk /workshop - EGR removal (my favourite place for D2 fixes etc) makes it look pretty easy.

I am aware that legally no mods can be done to the exhaust but aside from this what are the disadvantages?

Also I have the type 2 EGR setup, doesnt look any different in the way of pipes to and from; just a big cylinder to cool the exhaust I guess.

So I would like to hear peoples opinions of who got it done (why and how is/was it running) and those who decided not to (why not - disadvantages?)

    Thanks guys

The only potential trap is removing the bolts holding the EGR pipes to the exhaust manifold. If you use wd40 on them for a few days before you should get them out in one piece, but be prepared just in case you break one or both.

Minimal improvements are what most people notice, unless the EGR needs a damn good clean out

One of the purposes of the egr is to reduce combustion noise under part throttle, and the increase in part throttle clatter was immediately obvious after I de-egr'd mine. Of course there will be those who claim they don't notice it, but I'm betting they are either stone deaf, or have their stereo cranked most of the time

It's worth having a look at the Allard de-egr kit. It's nicely made and has a take off for a boost pressure sensor.

You need to email for a price, but when I bought one last year it was just under £55.00 shipped to Aus.

    cheers

Thanks for the info paul. Definately something I think I will do. Maybe not so much for performance wise but just for simplicity; less things can go wrong.
Will definately look into it, the link you supplied looks like a pretty good kit.

It was £49 and £16 postage to Melbourne 3029. At the current exchange rate that is $100 inc postage. Well worth it in my opinion and looks a good quality part. Will let you know how the install and removal goes.

Fair enough, mine was 100.69 exactly, cheaper than the damn front cross member spacers from here in Victoria.
So have you installed yours yet, and if so what (if any) changes have you noticed? Also what should people be prepared for (ie break those Allen bolts) if they were about to attempt this job? (ie me )

EDIT: just realised it's from the UK so even if you did have it chances are you haven't has the time to fit it. Nice work brain

Not likely to install for a few weeks yet. I'm planning an auto trans cooler upgrade (by professionals) and will try to slip in a couple of jobs (EGR, blue hoses, Provent, and maybe even radiator overhaul) while there is improved access.

You peaked my curiosity, after perusing discovery2.co.uk a while ago I saw the auto trans cooler but forgot about it till now. Subsequently I spent the next hour trying to get hold of one, there is one on eBay however I didn't like it as there was a quote "use original nuts". I thought to myself, this brand is apparently supplied with cover/gasket/10 s/steel socket head bolts and washers and locking compound according to the write up above. Now eBay wants 150 for the sump alone. I was able to get all the above mentioned items for less than 115 from Rocky Mountain Spares UK > Improved Engineered Parts and Accessories for your Land Rover and I got to speak to a nice as English guy with an accent! . the number I called after making a google search for country and area codes was 0011 44 1476 563525. All he did was put through my credit card details and that was that. Much much better value than eBay. Anywys thats my early morning rant. I will post this in another more appropriate area for others looking to do this job.

Although I have one of the sump coolers you are talking about waiting to go on, I am also planning a trans cooler radiator replacement with electric fan and manual over-ride switch for the ocassions when I do heavy towing. This requires playing with / modifying the support structure around the radiator area (hence being done by experts at auto transmissions r us in Balcatta) and I don't expect much change out of $2K.
If you haven't ordered an oil cooler temp gauge, I would recommend doing so. Thanks & cheers

Thanks for the recommendation, i will definitely have a look at a temp gauge. I guess I got confused a little, I hardly ever do any towing; in 2 years the heaviest thing I've towed is a Daewoo Lanos. It's a worthwhile job if your towing regularly, but for me I'm not at that point. The lt230 expansion seemed like a reasonable addition and I'm looking forward to see how the car reacts . Hopefully the installation goes well, I will let you know.
