I agree with your thoughts re the environmental impact of choked up engines.

My understanding of EGR, is not to reduce your carbon footprint, rather reduce the nitrogen oxides footprint. It will increase your carbon footprint. Nitrogen oxides are behind visible pollution like smog and acid rain and probably more important by far than carbon footprint for warming the planet. The introduction of the exhaust to the intake is used as a sort of inert gas "filler" so less oxygen and less combustion temperature so less nitrogen oxides produced. So less acid rain but more acid gunk in your donk. Have discovered that my EGR valve is stuck open so I am about to do the Blanking trick myself.
